Original Playwright - Luigi Pirandello (Cosi e, si vi pare). Version by Martin Sherman

Absolutely! (Perhaps)

No one has ever seen Signor Ponza's wife and her mother, Signora Frola together. Also, the neighbours have become suspicious because Signora Ponza never leaves her home and start asking questions. Ponza claims that this wife is really his second wife, the first having died in an earthquake that destroyed all records. Meanwhile his wife only pretends to be Signora Frola's daughter to humour Signora Frola, who, he claims, is insane. Thoroughly bewildered, Agazzi demands to meet Ponza's wife, who arrives heavily veiled proclaiming herself as both the daughter of Signora Frola and the second wife of Signor Ponza. Absolutely! {Perhaps} is brilliant comedy on the elusive nature of identity and reality and, like all of Pirandello's work, shows truth as subjective and relative and drama itself a mystery.

As You Desire Me

Elma is a singer in a sleazy 1930s Berlin nighclub. Having suffered an appalling assault during the First World War, she has no memory of her former life. A man appears and tells her that she is, in fact, the wife of an Italian aristocrat, and a new life awaits her. But when she goes to Italy to pursue this dream, she is greeted only by problems and disappointments. Pirandello uses this story to explore the mysteries of identity and memory, themes that preoccupied him throughout his life.

Original Playwright - Luigi Pirandello

Synopsis:

Actor Richard McMillan is Henry, a man of enormous wealth and privilege, who believes he is the eleventh-century Holy Roman Emperor and German King Henry IV. A fortress is built and actors are hired to carry out his fantasy. But is he mad or are we? Adapted from Luigi Pirandellos Enrico IV, Kilroys version transports Pirandellos main character into twenty-first-century Hollywood with sensationally dramatic results.

Liola

This high-spirited drama by Pirandello defies expectations. It is not the intellectual whirlwind of his Six Characters in Search of an Author but takes us instead to the heart of a rural community where property and kinship provoke fierce passions. Liola, a young man untroubled by tradition, takes the part of nature all the way. Of course it's wrong to force a well-guarded gate, but a boy who follows an open path, well... Written in Sicilian dialect, Liola is rarely played in the English language. Tanya Ronder's new version is performed by an Irish cast and gypsy musicians. It's unexpected, funny and touching. You can't have a full barrel and a drunk wife, you just can't cut it both ways.

But as the characters press further, and the director agrees, the limits of reality and imagination begin to blur, as the characters are driven towards tragedy. Six Characters In Search Of An Author

Pirandello's classic play updated for the twenty-first century by the team behind Faustus. Blurring the border between fiction and life, between the stage and the world outside, Six Characters in Search of an author exploded onto the stage in 1921 as one of the unique achievements of twentieth-century Drama. Updated and recontextualised in this vertiginous new version, it becomes a dark parable for a media-obsessed age and an exhilarating exploration of how we define art, ourselves and 'reality' in the twenty-first century.

Six Characters Looking For An Author

Six people arrive in a theatre during rehearsals for a play. But they are not ordinary people. they are the characters of a play that has not yet been written.Trapped inside a traumatic event from which they long to escape, they desperately need a writer to complete their story and release them. Intrigued by their situation, the director and his company of actors listen as the characters begin to describe and argue over the key events of their lives. One of the most extraordinary and mysterious plays of the 20th century, Six Characters speaks directly to an age of uncertainty - where do we come from, where are we going, how do we become what we want to be?

Synopsis:

Six fictional characters, abandoned by their creator, invade a rehearsal in progress and demand to be brought to life by a new author. But the characters' existential agenda collides with the more lighthearted ambitions of these theatre artists, whose open rehearsal "audience engagement event" becomes darkly entangled with the characters' tragic story. This intimate adaptation of Luigi Pirandello's absurdist classic foregrounds the comedic contrast between melodrama and the contemporary sensibilities of the acting company -- all the while asking us to consider just what we believe to be real.

Synopsis:

An identity crisis for the theater itself, Luigi Pirandello's 1921 epitome of absurdism is a masterpiece of blurred dramatic lines, brought cleverly to life in this production from director Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota and Theatre de la Ville, Paris. A dysfunctional family of six interrupts the rehearsal of a play to make a curious claim: They are characters who've been abandoned by their author and are seeking a theater troupe to give them an artful sense of completion. On a spare set, portrayers and portrayed begin to overlap, as fiction and reality follow suit. The result is a beguiling tragedy that turns notions of authorship and agency on their heads while offering humanity critical insight into its own selectively scribed existence.

Notes:

Original Playwright - Luigi Pirandello

Synopsis:

Written by Pirandello in 1917 with the second half re-written as an interactive game-show. The audience are asked to vote for either Guiseppe Ponza's account of the curious living arrangements that he has set up for his wife and his mum-in-law, after moving to a new town; or to agree with his mum-in-law's version. They are both equally far-fetched, but, in a strange way, equally believable. This unsovable conundrum seems to prove there is no such thing as 'Absolute truth'
Joe Cushley, What's On
