His play Travelling North had a successful production in Vietnam and the Club ran for a year in Beijing, where its depiction of back room committee politicking obviously struck a chord with the locals. A number of his stage works have been adapted for the screen, including the Removalists, Don's Party, the Club. Travelling North. Emerald City, Sanctuary and Brilliant Lies, and six of them have been made into quality Telemovies in Poland. David Williamson has won the Australian Film Institute film script award five times, for Petersen (1974), Don's Party (1976), Gallipoli (1981) Travelling North ( 1987) and Balibo (2009) and has won twelve Australian Writers' Guild AWGIE Awards. He also wrote the screenplay for Pharlap (1981) , the Year of Living Dangerously, (1983) receiving a nomination for best screenplay from the Writer's Guild of America. He wrote the screenplay for Showtime's On the Beach which won the Australian AFI award for best miniseries and was nominated for the Golden Globe awards in the U.S. He also wrote the screenplay for the HBO miniseries A Dangerous Life, about the fall of the Marcos regime in the Philippines which made the critics top ten list of the year in both New York and Los Angeles. Altogether he has written twelve screenplays and five miniseries, including the Four Minute Mile for the BBC and the Last Bastion about General McArthur's arrival in Australia in WW 11, which was sold all over the world. He lives on Queensland's Sunshine Coast with his writer wife, Kristin Williamson.

Amigos

Amigos
At the 1968 Olympics, the four Amigos, an Australian rowing team, won a bronze medal. It was lifetime bonding material but 35 years later, only two of the Amigos keep in touch. Jim is a banker with money expensive house and a young, beautiful wife. It seems he has it all but his friend Dick, a heart surgeon, has something that Jim wants: a sterling reputation. the 2 mates and their wives meet up in Queensland with competing personal agendas. And then Steven, the third Amigo, turns up ready to expose all about their past. A savagely funny play that exposes the subtle aggression and unacknowledged dependencies of male friendship - and the angst and irritation created for those on the friendship's sidelines.

Club, The

Club, The
Williamson's famous play about the uses and abuses of managerial power, which in 1976 foreshadowed the great changes that Australian football has since endured, proves even more prescient since the rise and fall of Super League. This is a play set behind the scenes, a head-on tackle of brawn versus bureaucracy.

Don Parties On

Don Parties On
It's 21 August 2010, the night of yet another federal election and, of course, yet another election night party at Don's place. Over the decades, as he and his friends watched governments come and go, they have also closely followed the incoming results from each other's lives: the tallies of luck and misfortune, the unexpected swings for and against. And through it all, the lesson that this crowd of superannuated baby boomers never seemed to learn is that politics and strong personalities should never be mixed with alcohol.

Notes:
Forty years Ago, A young playwright muscled his way onto the scene with A clutch of time-defining plays, including Don's Party. With this sequel, David Williamson celebrates four decades of telling the tribe their story.

Flatfoot

Flatfoot
Flatfoot (aka Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus) pops up in the 21st Century, enraged to find his ideas have been plundered through the ages by everyone from Shakespeare to sitcom writers. To prove his point, he takes us back to Ancient Rome where he must convince his producer that his new play will be a hit, won't offend the Roman censor and won't give servants ideas about their station. But the play hasn't been written, so Plautus must act it out before the cynical producer, making it up as he goes along. Pandemonium lurks just around the corner as, with a little help from his Greek wife, ex-dancer and seductress extraordinaire, they tackle all ten roles between them. A boisterous comedy for all ages

Handful of Friends, A

Handful of Friends, A
Russell, an academic, and his wife Wendy have recently returned from the US. Mark, a filmmaker, has just released a movie in which his actor/journalist wife, Sally, plays her first major role. Mutual friends believe the main characters are based on Russell and Wendy, and that they are cruelly satirised. Jill, Russell's sister who is devoted to her brother is angry and also resents Sally for incidents in their earlier lives. Old memories and antagonisms surface, triggered by the film, and what at first appears as envy and mAlice take on a different perspective as the group explode briefly into violence and settle for an uneasy reconciliation. Noone emerges honourably but they share the wisdom of hindsight.

Happiness

Happiness
Roland Makepeace knows what makes people happy. Why wouldn't he? He's an eminent professor of psychology who has devoted his life to scientifically investigating human well-being. But his theories are sorely tested when his wife meets an old suitor and his daughter threatens to go right off the rails. This sharply observed comedy suggests that theory can sometimes fall well short of reality and that finding happiness is easier said than done.

Heretic

Heretic
In 1925, American anthropologist Margaret Mead visited Samoa on a research trip and thought she had discovered a utopian society free of the restrictive social conventions of western societies. Her revelations of promiscuity among Samoan teenagers made her the guru of generations of academics and the 1960s aficionados of sex, rock'n'roll and free speech. In 1983 Australian academic Derek Freeman exposed Mead's findings as fraudulent and revealed the story of how and why the Samoans had duped her. Heretic explores the lifetime obsessions of two remarkable, headstrong protagonists. It also takes us inside the psyche of Derek Freeman, an iconoclast who was prepared to risk his marriage and shatter his career in the pursuit of truth

Influence

Influence
Ziggy Blasco is a talk-back host whose power rests in his influence. He fills Sydney's airwaves with his appeals to common-sense, his hard line with terrorists and his lashings at political correctness. Politicians beg to be on his show. He is courted by the world. A powerful public figure. But in the private sphere Ziggy's influence is fading away. He can barely maintain a conversation with his glamorous young wife Carmela. His daughter swings between truancy and dabbling on the stock market - with his money. His sister despises all that he stands for and while Ziggy preaches to the metropolis that there is no such thing as the working poor, his own housekeeper struggles to provide for her family. Now his elderly migrant Father reveals a dark family secret and threatens to go to the press. Just how far does Ziggy's influence reach? A scathing and bitingly funny play about the media personalities that dominate our lives and the divisions that can shatter families.

Let the Sunshine

Let the Sunshine
Let the Sunshine asks what happens when people of widely different political views are forced to co-exist. Toby, a maker of hard-hitting documentaries, flees Sydney with his wife after a blow up with the press. He arrives at his old childhood haven only to find the simple town has been transformed into a playground for the wealthy and his old friend has become married to a wealthy property developer. Add the couple's two incompatible offspring, a struggling musician and a ruthless corporate lawyer, and the scene is set for a vintage Williamson comedy.

Money and Friends

Money and Friends
Peter, a professor of pure mathematics, weekends at Crystal Inlet as do most of his friends: Conrad (a star television reporter) and his wife Jaquie; Stephen (a surgeon) and his wife Penny; Alex (a mega-lawyer) and his wife Vicki; and Margaret, a history professor, Peter's closest friend. Peter and Margaret are the exceptions to wealth and marriage-his wife passed away and her husband left her for a younger woman. As this weekend begins, Margaret is a little more bitter than usual and Peter is a little more accommodating as they've both got something bothering them. During drinks one evening, Margaret, fed up with the "tribe," gets a little too nasty, ending the evening on a sour note. Margaret's honesty prompts Peter to tell her that he's about to lose everything unless he can come with $40,000 to cover a failed loan. She insists he tell everyone and ask for their help, but he refuses and makes her promise not reveal anything. the weekend progresses, and taking Margaret's lead, Peter attempts some honesty, starting with her. He tells Margaret to stop picking up younger men, and then goes on to inform his other friends what he really thinks, leaving them stunned. Initially, except Margaret, they never want to see him again, but soon realize that what Peter did was actually good for them. Realizing that Peter is really their best friend, Alex and Vicki plan a surprise party in his honor. In light of these plans Margaret can't keep quiet and spills the story of Peter's financial trouble, suggesting they should loan him $40,000. Despite their wealth, however, they'd rather die than part with any of their money, even to help their friend. In the end, all are forced to make decisions regarding Peter's debt, and as money initially tore them apart, it will inevitably bring some of the friends back together again.

Up For Grabs

Up For Grabs
Art dealers: parasites or prophets? Simone Allen likes to see herself as the latter but when given the opportunity to sell one of the better Whiteleys, her behaviour becomes less than angelic as the pressure mounts. Driven by greed and aesthetics, Williamson's characters discover how far they will go when more than just a beautiful work of art is up for grabs in this sexy comedy of manners.
