Secret of Belonging, The

Synopsis:
the true story of Josef Herman, the Polish born artist who became famous for his bold and distinctive paintings of the British working class and probably best remembered for his paintings of Welsh miners, is told in a visually exciting new Drama set to contemporary urban folk music. Josef Herman fled his native Warsaw to escape the growing anti-Semitism and ended up living in the small mining community of Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley. Set at the end of the Second World War, when many people had been displaced, this new play is a humorous and tender look at the relationship Herman had with Wales, and how the warmth, humour and passion of the community of Ystradgynlais became his muse and helped shape and define his work and reputation as an artist for the rest of his life. Indeed his paintings of Welsh miners were a particular focus for Herman during the eleven years that he lived there from the mid-1940s.

Notes:
Painstakingley researched, (Swansea-based Antic Corporation visited Ystyradgynlais during the rehearsal period to get some first hand experience of painting And sketching from Swansea Artist, Sarah Hopkins), the Company have produced A visually exciting production which is uniquely set to A contemporary urban folk influenced score by Swansea Urban Folk Musician And Composer Andy Jones.
