James Stock won the 1992 George Devine Award for BLUE NIGHT IN the HEART OF the WEST. He was playwright-in-residence at Contact Theatre, Manchester in 1990-1 on an Arts Council Bursary and at the RSC in 1992-3 on a Thames Television Bursary. His plays include A PRICK-SONG FOR the NEW LEVIATHAN (Plain Clothes Productions, Old Red Lion 1990); the SHAMING OF BRIGHT MILLAR (Contact Theatre 1991); BLUE NIGHT IN the HEART OF the WEST (Plain Clothes Productions, the Bush and British tour 1991; Traverse Theatre 1993); Theatre de l'Instant, Brest; Theatre de la Cite Internationale, Paris; Theatre Garonne, Toulouse 1995); STAR-GAZY PIE AND SAUERKRAUT (Royal Court Theatre Upstairs 1995). For BBC Radio he wrote KISSING the GARGOYLE (1994) for which he was joint winner of the 1995 Richard Imison Award - and RON KOOP's LAST ROADSHOW (1995), a live drive-in radio road movie.

Synopsis:
A Scottish traveller becomes involved with the daughter of a farming family from Iowa. But this is no ordinary family. In this whacky and provocative play, which premiered at the Bush in 1991, nothing is as it seems, and the theatrical possibilities are endless.
