Mark Ryan

MARK RYAN  (1959 - 2011)

Nationality:    English
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    n/a

As the guitarist with Adam and the Ants, Mark Ryan was at the forefront of the New Romantic movement that swept away Punk in the late seventies. By the time the band began to achieve chart success, Ryan, whose stage name was The Kid, had already departed, following long-running disagreements. No longer an Ant, he joined The Photons and The Moors Murderers (alongside vocalist Steve Strange who would later form Visage) before studying music and developing an interest in theatre at Dartington College of Arts. On graduating, he toured with Horse and Bamboo Theatre Company before moving to Cardiff where he began to write plays, producing almost a script a year from 1990 onwards. His earliest plays were written with young people in mind, largely for companies in the Welsh capital, including the Sherman Theatre, Made in Wales, Spectacle and Equinox. His subject matter was never predictable. His work includes an opera, a one-woman show about Dorothy Squires and, for the Snap Theatre Company, he adapted Tom Jones and Pinocchio, and wrote a puppet show based on childrens books by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Another puppet show, The Lazy Ant, won an award for Best Script and Best Production at the International Childrens Theatre Festival in Shanghai. His most accomplished work, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as Told to Carl Jung by an Inmate of Broadmoor Asylum, was seen at the Edinburgh Festival in 1998 before touring the UK and to San Francisco. His last play - Sean Tyrone, a Symphony of Horrors - was produced by Company of Sirens at the Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff in 2010. An occasional actor, he composed music for his own plays and others, often doubling up as music director in performance. Born in Tottenham, London on March 2, 1959, he is survived by his second wife and two children. He died, aged 51, after long bouts of illness from liver damage, on January 31, 2011.

Branwen's Starling

Synopsis:
The Mabinogion is a collection of Medieval Welsh folk stories, derived from pre-Christian Celtic mythology. Branwen's story is a rich seam, telling of her ill-fated marriage to Matholwch, King of Ireland, and the subsequent fury of Branwen's half-brother, Envissyen. The tale is typically medieval: in part dark, bloody yet filled with romance, magic and mystery.
