GEORGE ROSS

  (1908 - 1982)

Nationality:    British

Literary Agent:    n/a

George Isaac Ross (born 29 July 1908) was born in Johannesburg the oldest of eight children and named Isaac; George was a nickname he was given when he moved to the UK in 1938. He moved because he felt there would be better opportunities for a playwright in London than in South Africa at that time. At Wits University he reluctantly trained as an accountant. In England he married Eileen Arnold in 1943 and they had one child, a daughter born in 1946. He worked as an accountant and used holidays, combined with some leave, to write, each play taking about six weeks. Campbell Singer was a fellow South African, an actor who would go through all dialogue as he had a better idea of how it would translate to the stage. The setting of business contexts derived from George's own work experience and his plays are set in a time when most people working in offices were men. They are consequently difficult for amateur dramatic societies to stage. - [with thanks to Judith Johnson jrjsquared08@gmail.com]
