Candide

Candide
Do you believe in silver linings? Candide is an optimist. A dreamer. He believes that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. But that belief is about to be tested as Candide's comfortable life is overtaken by an endless barrage of misfortune. As his world collapses around him, we are transported across the centuries to new locations and parallel universes. How will Candide's optimism fare when it collides with life in the 21st century? RSC Writer in Residence Mark Ravenhill responds to Voltaire's novel in a new play directed by Lyndsey Turner. Lyndsey's recent productions include Posh at the Royal Court, and the critically-acclaimed ChimErica which transfers to the West End this Summer. Dangerous ideas, extraordinary individuals and flying sheep collide in a wild philosophical ride.

Desire to Kill on the Tip of the Tongue, A

Desire to Kill on the Tip of the Tongue, A
A Desire to Kill. . .shows a side of France unknown to the holiday brochures; a hopeless underclass of directionless youth filling their days with drinking, shagging and fantasies of violence that sometimes become reality. Rou is the group's smart arse lad-about-town, bragging about his affair with a married woman to his mates Vic and Poupon outside yet another nightclub he is barred from. In this atmosphere of laddish competitiveness, on the night of a full moon, aggression flares up at the slightest insult, and Rou's swaggering finally inspire his 'friends' to stand up to him. The secret that comes to light unexpectedly pushes Poupon to the edge of sanity, with explosive results. A Desire to Kill. . . is a revealing snapshot of dark, brutal world, where the only motivations are lust, desire and the search for gratification, until the mask of bravado is stripped away and the vision of loneliness it reveals becomes unbearable.

Dick Whittington And His Cat

Synopsis:
Pantomime about a boy and his cat who set off to London to make their fortune - usually with Dick's Brother (Idle Jack) and mother - there they usually meet Baron Fitzwarren and sail away to seek treasure. In some versions King Rat goes with them to steal the treasure, in others they reach a land infested with rats where they haven't heard of cats and Dick does a deal, returning home rich he becomes Lord Mayor of London. Based extremely loosely on a real person (Richard Whittington, 1350 to 1423), there is a statue of the cat outside the Whittington Hospital in North London where Dick is supposed to have heard the bells say "Turn again Whittington, Lord Mayor of London" as he trudged away from the city. First recorded panto on this theme was in 1814.

Life In Three Acts, A

Life In Three Acts, A
With honesty, humour and occasional anger, performer Bette Bourne tells the playwright Mark Ravenhill about his life. the story moves from a post-war childhood, to the Gay Liberation Front, life in a drag commune and on to the creation of the ground-breaking Bloolips company and beyond. the piece, in three parts, marks a different series of events in Bette's life to reveal a portrait of an amazing individual and celebration of the momentous struggles and achievements of gay liberation. Each part can be enjoyed as self-contained stories or seen together for a fuller picture. the performance is a reading of edited transcripts of a series of long, private conversations, a recreation on stage of two friends reminiscing about one of their lives. 'Bette' and 'mark' will be played by the real individuals. But at some performances guest artists will recreate the original conversations, finding their own path through the extraordinary life of Bette Bourne.

Life of Galileo, The

Life of Galileo, The
Arguably Brecht's greatest play, A Life of Galileo charts the seventeenth century scientist's extraordinary fight with the church over his assertion that the earth orbits the sun. the figure of Galileo, whose 'heretical' discoveries about the solar system brought him to the attention of the Inquisition, is one of Brecht's more human and complex creations. Temporarily silenced by the Inquisition's threat of torture, and forced to abjure his theories publicly, Galileo continues to work in private, eventually smuggling his work out of the country. Brecht's beautiful depiction of the explosive struggle between scientific discovery and religious fundamentalism is captured masterfully in this new translation by RSC writer-in-residence, Mark Ravenhill.

Mother Clap's Molly House

Mother Clap's Molly House
Ravenhill weaves two time zones - London 1726, where Mrs Tull's whores are giving her a hard time, a man in a dress is looking for a job, her husband has a roving eye, and the apprentice boy keeps disappearing. Meanwhile, in 2001, a group of wealthy gay men are preparing for a raunchy party. This black comedy not only celebrates the diversity of human sexuality but also provides a fascinating insight into a hidden chapter of London's history. Unusually, the text also includes both lyrics and score for the songs

Nation

Nation
A parallel world, 1860. Two teenagers thrown together by a tsunami that has destroyed Mau's village and left Daphne shipwrecked on his South Pacific island, thousands of miles from home. One wears next to nothing, the other a long white dress; neither speaks the other's language; somehow they must learn to survive. As starving refugees gather, Daphne delivers a baby, milks a pig, brews beer and does battle with a mutineer. Mau fights cannibal Raiders, discovers the world is round and questions the reality of his tribe's fiercely patriarchal gods. Together they come of age, overseen by a foul-mouthed parrot, as they discard old doctrine to forge a new Nation.

Our Day

Synopsis:
Our Day is a new opera set against a backdrop of events in Northern Ireland in 1972. That year, as well as being the bloodiest of the troubles, marked the gold medal win for local girl, Mary Peters. Her achievement at the Munich Olympics briefly unified a country at war with itself and created a much-welcomed respite from the daily cycle of violence. It also allowed the country to pause for a moment to cheer Peters to victory. In 2012 it will be 40 years since that win. Mitchell and Ravenhill have created a gripping new music drama which tackles head-on the meeting of violence, hatred - and possible reconciliation.

Women in Love

Synopsis:
Congregating in a crowded pub, an angel appeared to us. That is, a tall wordless young chap wearing a heavy overcoat, period drama good looks, and the kind of costume-shop angel wings that well-heeled party girls like to strap on over their silver bikinis appeared to us. He led us to a reclusive shared garden in a square, where we found three actors, shivering faintly in front of three microphones. In turn, they monologued their way through their three different recollections of one day in hospital, where the man was sick, the girl his lover visited him and Nancy' the gay nurse brought in the TV and took it away again.
