Miguel was born on December 19th 1946 in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. After his family moved to New York his father abandoned them. Miguel took to crime joined a street gang and at 14 he was a rent boy. His first criminal conviction was at the age of 11 and at age 25 he was sent to Sing Sing for armed robbery. It was whilst he was there that he wrote his first play "Short Eyes". the play was nominated for six Tony Awards. Once out of prison he continued writing and also took up acting. He founded the Nuyorican Poets Cafe with other writers and artists. It was a venue for Puerto Rican performance poets. He died on June 16th 1988.
