GERALDINE PILGRIM

Nationality:    British
email:    Click here to contact     Website:    Click here

Literary Agent:    n/a

Geraldine Pilgrim works across theatre and the visual arts and is known for her evocative installations and site-specific performances which create a contemporary dialogue with occupied and deserted historic houses and buildings. Working with the history - imagined and real - of a space, she specialises in creating installations and performances in unusual buildings and landscapes. She responds to the architecture of the site for inspiration and narrative to reveal the memories and atmospheres that have built up over the years. Geraldine trained as a fine artist and theatre designer. She co-founded and became artistic director of Hesitate and Demonstrate, the influential visual theatre company, and has since been making installations, theatre performances and large scale site-specific events. Geraldine is an Artsadmin artist, an associate lecturer at Wimbledon College of Art and visiting lecturer at Central St. Martins, Goldsmiths College and LAMDA. Geraldine runs courses and workshops for emerging and established arts practitioners and has led both summer and winter schools throughout Europe.

DIY10

Synopsis:
No Regrets was a developmental project looking at the nature of regret, how personal experience can inform practice and how artists can explore different ways of transforming personal experience into artistic outcomes. Do you regret : Not having done something you always wanted to do. . .or. . .Wish you could undo something you regret having done? 5 people including myself met at St Martins Church Colchester. It was a perfect space - a beautiful, peaceful and calm environment that lent itself to allow us to build a sense of trust and express very personal regrets that were only to be heard by each other; and were then given the task to each spend up to £100 in the following week in order to have no regrets. We met again at the end of that week and used this experience to create a performance/installation response. It was an emotional weekend and was a privilege to have spent that time with the group. My no regrets task eventually resulted in a happy outcome.

Flight

Synopsis:
Artist Geraldine Pilgrim is known for her powerful, evocative transformations of buildings and landscapes, using memories and stories to bring a location to life. For her latest work Flight, she heads to the Lake District National Park to create a performance-journey inspired by the history of aviation, particularly in Cumbria during the First World War, and how the pursuit of flight changed the world. The audience starts the 60-minute journey in a specially-created Museum in the Brockhole house and are then guided through a Sky Corridor onto the terrace and out into the historic Thomas Mawson gardens towards the lake. Working with over 100 cross-generational volunteer performers, Pilgrim conjures up scenes from past and present. . .a ghostly bi-plane, a deserted airmen's mess, Icarus' wings, a forest of weather balloons, glamorous 60s air stewardesses, a parachute in a tree. . . At the heart of Flight are the young airmen of the First World War and the people they left behind, looking up at the sky waiting for their loved ones to come home like migrating birds - but so many never did.

Lost Time

Synopsis:
Seven performers experiment with a theatre-based devised performance within a box set. Exploring archaeological layers of theatrical tradition, Lost Time looks at a theatrical form that is frozen in time and nearly vanished. Peeling back layers and revealing the ghosts of the past, it links these traditions to contemporary performance whilst retracing the memories of past curtain calls and the echoes of applause. Lost Time takes an iconic murder mystery and turns it inside out to look at loss, hope and memory. The performers create a dreamlike world which interweaves recently shot film, the stage directions of an unnamed play and a narrative that traces eleven days in a woman's life; from the moment she mysteriously disappears from her Berkshire home to the moment she is discovered dancing in the ballroom of a Harrogate hotel apparently suffering from amnesia.

Sitting Comfortably

Synopsis:
Geraldine is currently developing Sitting Comfortably, a Jerwood choreographic award to research and investigate the memory of movement in older people, how their body may remember happiness and joy as well as grief and loss and how these movements including getting up from a chair to engage with the world can be utilised into performance imagery. Spa

Synopsis:
Imagine a contemporary spa built within the remains of a disused hospital, where echoes of dreams and nightmares haunt the corridors and imagery appears which is not expected when doors marked engaged are opened. Steaming underground pools in basements with silent swimmers, overgrown gardens concealing secrets of the past and chrome trolleys with life-saving equipment hurtling down corridors through swinging doors while cigar-smoking men clad in towels pad barefoot in the distance clutching mobile phones. A spa where the presence of Elizabeth Garratt Anderson constantly haunts the corridors with the glimpse and the rustle of skirt as a turn of the stair is climbed.

Toynbee

Synopsis:
Fragments of other lives and times revealed through a site-specific journey. Created with volunteer performers, musicians, and design and direction students who worked alongside the professional team, TOYNBEE was a site-specific performance installation in December 2013 that journeyed across the historic site of Toynbee Hall and Studios. A dynamic centre of social, political and artistic activity since 1884, TOYNBEE created dialogues between its past and future within a landscape of music, image and performance. Traces of lives were glimpsed in corners and windows, while footsteps echoed to the sound of the different voices of the contemporary East End.

Well

Synopsis:
Geraldine Pilgrim brings her flair for powerfully evocative transformations of buildings and landscapes to an iconic industrial site in East London. The former Sanofi factory in Dagenham East which closed in 2013 after 79 years is the setting for Well, an hour-long performance journey which celebrates the life of the former pharmaceutical factory and those who worked in it, re-energising its now empty spaces with memories and stories. Well entwines the story of the factory (which opened as May & Baker in 1934) with the history of medicine, apothecaries and chemists, the discovery of new drugs and the desire to create a better world and make people well. The empty building is asleep and dreaming of its past. Half-opened doors reveal moments of medicine's history. A choir of chemists sing an A capella lullaby of periodic tables, tablets and pills pour into an empty space, video images inhabit metal cabinets and the scientists' white coats hang ready for the day's work. May and Baker is renowned as the company who, in 1939, discovered sulphapyridine, colloquially known as M&B 693 or simply M&B. M&B 693 was one of the first generation of sulphonamide antibiotics and the first known chemical cure for pneumonia. It could either be taken in tablet form or the powder could be placed in wounds. It was used so widely during the Second World War that May & Baker had difficulty keeping up with demand. Medicine, apothecary and pharmacy are united within the performance which traces the history of biomedical science alongside the manufacture of a medical tablet - from plant source to pill - that enables people around the world to be "well."

Notes:
Commissioned by Creative Barking and Dagenham (CBD), Well is a genuine collaboration with the local community. Its 170 performers include former Sanofi employees, students from Barking and Dagenham College, ballroom dancing couples, choirs, line dancers, contemporary dance groups and gardeners. The factory inspires love and happy memories from its ex-employees. Kathy, the cleaning supervisor who worked at the factory for 23 years and takes part in the piece, says she still hears the voices of her colleagues as she walks around the empty corridors.
