Standards of Decency Project

Synopsis:
Blue Coyote theater Group presents a program of nine new short plays that collectively the notions of decency and obscenity. the playwrights were asked to write a piece that includes at least one of these elements--nudity, blasphemy, and violence--in a manner that is fully warranted and justified (that is, that avoids mere gratuitousness or sensationalism), while also intended to offend conventional standards of decency. Blue Coyote says that it seeks to spark a discussion about the uses and abuses of transgressive performance onstage with this presentation.

We Play For the Gods

Synopsis:
"We Play for the Gods was prompted by the question 'on whose shoulders do we as women theater artists stand?'" says Women's Project Producing Artistic Director Julie Crosby. This question led 14 artists of the Women's Project Lab to Ellen Stewart, the legendary founder of La MaMa who in the 1960s blew open the doors of Dramatic expression and gave voice to an extraordinary and diverse generation of theater artists. Inspired by her words, 'We play for the Gods and in return, they play for us,' this collaborative play was developed at Womens Project over eighteen months, three workshops, abundant good humor, and the occasional mojito." We Play for the Gods is the tale of four ordinary women working in a research institute and one trickster goddess who messes around with their lives as only a deity can.

What We Have

Synopsis:
ForePlay is Flux Theatre Ensemble's annual exploratory staged reading series where playwrights riff on the themes of Flux's main production. Human 2.0 riffed on August Schulenburg's play about the next step in human evolution, DEINDE. Over three nights, Flux presented short plays by 14 playwrights imagining what various human senses will look like in the future. What if we had the capacity to smell like a dog? Use radar like a bat? See all the colors of the electromagnetic spectrum? How will we upgrade our sense of beauty and justice? What will happen when we truly have unlimited memory? All of these short plays explore what it means to be human in an era of rapid technological change.
