Australian playwright and Theatre worker Ian Nash was born on February 19, 1942. He was a foundation member of Melbourne Writers' Theatre. He completed an Arts degree at Melbourne University in 1963. He was awarded a Stanford University Writing Scholarship in 1968, the Kew Festival Short Story Prize in 1984 and received a Theatre Board GrANT in 1987. During his student years he acted in plays at Melbourne University, and later became a teacher at RMIT University. His plays, short stories and reviews have appeared in many journals in Australia and around the world. His publications include 'Two-Up : 4 Short Plays for 2 Actors' (Carlton, Victoria: the Author, 1994), 'send-Off' (Montmorency, Victoria: Yackandandah Playscripts, 1986) and 'show of Strength / A Boy for Me, a Girl for You' (Newtown, Victoria: Neptune Press, 1983) His other performed but unpublished plays include 'sweeny's Supper Show' (1981), 'Lost Victoria' (1985), and 'Little Eva' (date unknown).

Burnout

Synopsis:
Teacher assaulted me, says teenager. What could possibly lead any teacher in his right mind to strike out at an innocent 14 year-old? And how would parents, colleagues and administrators respond to such a violation? Mr. and Mrs. Miller, seeking an explanation for the "assault" on their adolescent son, find themselves virtually under siege in the office of deputy principal Paul Percy. Instead of placation and explanation, they are caught up in the ongoing tussle between the accused teacher, the pupil welfare coordinator and the deputy principal. The ensuing drama is played out under the omniscient eye of the school cleaner and amidst the eery strains and menacing tones of the office lady and the student body. Mr. Chips, bless his memory, would turn in his grave.
