Boiler, The

Synopsis:
Renata Columbine is perfectly happy as a stay-at-home philosopher behind deadline on a book of GCSE-level ontology, until her boiler starts making funny noises. She calls maintenance, and soon her small flat is swarming with plumbers, together with a frightening array of pipes and associated paraphernalia, including such wonderful implements as 'bent scrimmages, dug hammers and warrior ring brackets', Wendy Metcalf (author and Renata) pitches her battle between philosophy and plumbing on two levels: the social (patronising vegetarian intellectual versus repressed working-class males); and the metaphysical (sentient beings versus inanimate object). It's not certain who wins.
