Louis Marriott was born on the Old Pound Road, Saint Andrew, Jamaica, 22 May 1935, son of the late Egbert Marriott, Builder, and the late Edna Irene Thompson-Marriott. He is a Jamaican playwright with over twenty plays for theatre to his credit including the classic Pack of Jokers, Playboy and Bedioarel He has written scores of programmes for radio and television, including the University of Brixton for BBC radio. Apart from having been Deputy Editor of Publications for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and Editor of Public Opinion, his journalism has been syndicated in some 200 English-language newspapers and magazines throughout the world. He has been a regular guest writer in several Jamaican newspaper publications. Having held several posts in Senior Public Relations including that of Government Public Relations Officer and Press Officer for Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley, he is currently the Executive Officer of the Michael Manley Foundation, a member of the Performing Rights Society and the Jamaican Federation of Musicians.

The play is an example of works conceived with a Jamaican audience in mind, a Jamaican audience conscious of the melting pot in which it lived. It offers a unique perspective on the spirit of a people who held on to traditional beliefs and customs in the face of colonial opprobrium as the populace struggled to gain its political, social and cultural independence.
