Find The Lady

Tom MacIntyre
Find the Lady is a the latest collection of short stories by acclaimed writer Tom MacIntyre. Written as a series of 'dreamscapes', many of them are influenced by the writer's vivid dreams and imaginative life, as well as the great mythologies of the classical and Celtic traditions. MacIntyre imagines himself in scenes with great figures of myth and literature in a way that reflects on how writers use myth and history, and the relationship of the general and particular, while his unique talent with language brings each tale alive.

Gallant John-Joe, The

Tom MacIntyre
The Gallant John-Joe is the soliloquy of John-Joe Concannon, a Cavan widower grappling with physical and mental infirmity and trying unsuccessfully to plumb the mysteries of his relationship with his troubled daughter. His Lear-like cry, by turns tragic and uproariously funny, is both instantly recognizable and marvellously strange, a creation only Mac Intyre could have brought to the stage, and the page.

Great Hunger, The

Tom MacIntyre
The Great Hunger is Mac Intyre's version of Patrick Kavanagh's long poem of the same name. It represents the life and dreams of Patrick Maguire, Monaghan small farmer and potato-gatherer, a man suffering from sexual and spiritual starvation. The play fuses image, movement and language into a classic of contemporary Irish drama

What Happened Bridgie Cleary?

Synopsis:
The title's fractured syntax is the first clue that Tom MacIntyre's play will not be a straightforward retelling of the story of Bridget Cleary, a Tipperary woman who was burned to death by her husband in 1895 for suspected witchcraft. The setting, we realise, is the afterlife, where Bridgie sits at her Singer sewing machine, listens to distant heron cries, and tells stories with a compelling combination of intensity and matter-of-factness: "Bridgie Cleary, who made weskits for the gentry, hats for the quality. Bridgie Cleary, always the step or two above buttermilk . . ." She is joined by her husband Mikey, now an old man because he outlived her. Indirectly and allusively, they exchange stories and information, working their way towards an inevitable reckoning. a third party then appears, their snooty neighbour William, who was previously Bridgie's lover.
