Hard Feelings

Hard Feelings
Thatcher's Britain Brixton, 1981. As tensions mount on the streets, in the safety of their home, a group of Oxford University graduates barely notice what's happening on the streets outside as police and rioters clash, shops are looted, and buildings are set on fire. In both worlds there is a fight for rights. . . a fight for respect . . . a fight for control. Who will win? Who will lose? Who will make the strongest cocktail? And when the dust finally settles the question remains. . . Will things ever change?

Notes:
Hard Feelings was first staged at the Oxford Playhouse in 1982 before transferring to the Bush theatre in 1983, directed by Mike Bradwell. It was later broadcast as a BBC Play for Today. Hard Feelings was revived by Defibrillator Productions in a production at the Finborough theatre in 2013.

Progress

Progress
the play is set in the London home of Will, a handsome, well-educated television-documentary researcher, and his attractive, social activist wife, Ronee, who runs a community center in South London. anxious to match his wife's liberal concerns, Will has taken over most of the household chores, and has formed a male consciousness-raising group, whose principal interest seems to be a close examination of pornography. Ronee, however, is now involved with a female lover, and her unwillingness to expand the relationship to a menage a trois (as Will would like) has driven a wedge between husband and wife. Further complications arise when Ronee brings home a young battered wife, ange, whose brutish young husband soon discovers her whereabouts and tries, by force, to take her home. also in and out of the action are the rather pathetic Oliver, who is shattered by the sudden absence of his live-in lover, Martin; a young barman named Bruce (who is Martin's new boyfriend); and Will and Ronee's boarder, Mark, a Fleet Street gutter journalist who delights in tasteless jokes and imagines himself to be sexually irresistible. Filled with bitterly funny repartee, and sudden bouts of anger and violence, it is the uneasy relationship between these characters which forms the disturbing, but revealing, heart of the play-and, when all pretenses are stripped away, demonstrates how little these middle-class activists are able to bring order to their own lives, much less to the larger society in which they are foundering.

Solid Air

Synopsis:
Look, here we are with time to kill, enough hash brownies to get the entire population of Oxford high and two guitars. Let's just jam, man, like the old days. An Oxford College Ball, June 1973. Genius folk musician John Martyn is on the bill and he's brought along his equally brilliant friend, Nick Drake. Despite their wildly different natures - John is a maverick; charming, brash and reckless, whilst Nick is shy and pensive - the two are close friends. But whereas Martyn's career has taken off with the release of his groundbreaking album, Solid Air, Nick's has stalled after his last effort,Pink Moon. And he doesn't want to talk about it. Backstage, between sets, the two musicians hook up with an unlikely crew - Ball Committee Rep, Anthony Blair, his date Sarah (who has dreams of joining the RSC), anti-ball protestor Dave (who isn't supposed to be there) and off-duty Special Forces squaddie, George. Fuelled by hash brownies, crates of alcohol, lobster and crisps, the party spend a reflective night bantering, bickering, making music and singing. Exploring themes of artistic purity vs commercial realism, social mobility and friendship,Solid Air is a funny and moving play echoing sentiments of today's social disparity.
