HUGH LEONARD  (1927 - 2009)

Nationality:    Irish

Literary Agent:    The Agency (London) Ltd

Hugh Leonard' is the pen-name of John Keyes Byrne. He is, as Christopher Fitz-Simon has written, `the most prolific and most technically assured of modern Irish playwrights', and his cosmopolitanism is shown by the range of his work, twenty-five plays (eighteen of which have been published), and seven adaptations of others' work for stage, something like thirty individual plays for television, work for over forty TV series totalling well in excess of 120 original episodes, and over 100 episodes for serials based on others' works (Emily Bronte, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Somerville & Ross, for example), as well as over a dozen film scripts. the output is truly phenomenal. although a constant contributor to television, it is for the Theatre that he has produced his finest work.

Summer

Summer
Three married couples, accompanied by the son of one and daughter of another, assemble on a hill near Dublin to picnic. During the afternoon the various relationships between them, on the surface and beneath it, become apparent, while the young people regard their elders somewhat sardonically across the generation gap. Time Was

Synopsis:
Set in middleclass Dublin suburbia, this is a comedy fantasy which puts forward the theory that because so many people are longing for the 'good old days', time has ruptured and people are disappearing back into the past of which they claim to be so fond. Similarly people they want to see again are appearing by the score. How these happenings are handled by P.J. and ellie and their guests John and Bea provides an hilarious and occasionally thought provoking evenings entertainment.
