All Quiet On the Western Front

Synopsis:
Paul Baumer, a poetic young man, along with a group of his schoolfriends, is browbeaten by their teacher into joining the "Glorious adventure" of WWI. they soon find out the grim realities. We see the young men taking joy from little victories - the extra rations carelessly ordered before half the battalion was wiped out; the sing song in a bombed out house as it is reduced to rubble around them, an elicit liaison with women across a river on a midnight "mission". But there are also the losses of friends, and the atrocities that are unavoidable - for instance when Paul has to kill an enemy soldier and then lie all night in a shell-hole with the dying man, riven by agonies of conscience. One by one all his schoolfriends die, to be followed by Paul's unofficial "Father figure", Kat. and finally Paul too meets his end in the dying months of a war that has so inured the Germans to loss that dispatches on the day of his death only warrant the single sentence "all Quiet on Western Front"

Notes:
Originally directed by Giles Croft, A cast of ten bring to life erich Maria Remarque's classic WWI novel of A doomed generation, "the men, who even if they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war". In A bombed-out factory set (original des. Phil Brunner), miked up so that hammers raked Across corrugated iron becomes withering machine-gun fire, And slammed grilles explosions, the story unfolds like A testament from pergatory, with the comrades bewildered And surprised to learn of their own deaths.

Around the World In Eighty Days

Synopsis:
Set in a circus, to which Passepartout has returned after his master Phileas Fogg has settled down. When the workers are apparently "late" finishing a break, their new foreman demands to know why. the reason? "We go by the Frenchman". It seems that Fogg's parting gift to Passepartout was his flawlessly accurate timepiece. the workers proceed to tell the story of Fogg's epic journey. With six actors playing all the parts, and a set in which everything from steamships to land yachts to elephants are built before the audiences eyes from the circus paraphernalia, the play tells the story faithfully but points up the softening of Fogg's stiff, starched heart.

Bambi - A Life In the Forest

Synopsis:
Bambi is born, and explores his new world. He befriends Faline and her slightly frail twin brother, Gobbo, whose mother is convinced he will lead the herd some day. Later, when Man first comes to the forest, Gobbo is too weak to run with the others and is assumed to have been killed. Bambi slowly assumes more authority. When another deer tries to take Faline from him, he fights for her. everybody assumes Bambi will now lead the herd, but suddenly Gobbo returns, having been, not killed, but caught and taken home as a pet. He has the mark of a halter around his neck. He is full of stories of how loving man is - not the monster to be feared that Bambi describes. When man returns there is a battle of wills., which deer will follow Gobbo and run towards Man, and which will run away from him with Bambi. Some follow Gobbo. . . and with him are cut down by the hunters' guns. Bambi, saddened, but now recognised as leader whose instincts are good, takes over the herd, until his own fawn is born to Faline, and the cycle begins again.

Notes:
Based entirely on Felix Salten's original story, with no forest fire, no Thumper, no skunk And no walking on ice, this play revolves Around the subplot - omitted in Disney's version - featuring Gobbo - Another fawn who is eligible to succeed As leader of the heard. Intended for more mature Audiences of 7/9 +, it is A Dramatic story with some humour, And A lot of emotional depth. It Also raises questions About loyalty And politics in A way. (hitherto blocked by Disney Corporation)

Robin Hood

Synopsis:
Robin Hood is the wayward son of a Nobleman. Poaching the King' s deer with his commoner friend, the two boys are caught. Robin is horrified when he is let off, but his friend is taken to be hanged. Shamed and guilt-ridden, Robin runs away to France. He returns to find his Father dispossessed, his lands confiscated and himself declared outlaw. Prince John is in charge and injustice is rife. Robin sees the corruption all around him and, when he is held up by Little John and Will Scarlett, he instead enlists their help to rob an avaricious Bishop. Before long robin's fame has spread and his band of dependants has grown. He helps an impoverished knight to retain the lands he was about to be cheated of, but when the sheriff of Nottingham declares war on the outlaw, the scene is set for a Dramatic showdown. Betrayed by a common murderer who is embittered to be refused entry to Robin's band, Robin is captured, and only a daring trick on the scaffold itself can save him.

Notes:
Inspired by the original ballads And legends, which tell of A hero outlawed, not by injustice, but by his own failings, this more layered than Average children's version of Robin Hood is brooding "dark knight" rather than A chortling hero in Lincoln green, making up for his earlier failings, And plagued by doubts that he is strong enough to take the burden of so many trusting him to fight oppression. For All that, the play buckles A swash with the best of them, And has plenty of lighter moments And high Adventure to keep An Audience entertained. And Peace is still restored with the return of Coer de Leon!
