Beards, Beards, Beards

Synopsis:
'Beatrix didn't want a tiara. Beatrix wanted a Beard!' From Charles Darwin to Abraham Lincoln, Karl Marx to Mr Twit, it is said that the secret to power and greatness is all in the size and shape of the beard. From award-winning company, Trick of the Light Theatre (The Bookbinder, The Road That Wasn't There), comes a tale of one young girl's increasingly inventive efforts to grow the world's most magnificent beard. Armed with bubble bath and canned spaghetti, join a madcap and hilarious musical romp of physical comedy and clowning, as our plucky young heroine shakes up social rules and attempts to answer the questions that have puzzled mankind since the dawn of the beard.

Engine Room, The

Synopsis:
In 1981 the South African rugby team toured New Zealand, and our country was plunged into chaos. Flash forward a few decades, and the 2008 election saw the conflict make headlines again, when John Key told reporters he couldn't remember his position on the tour. So what was John doing during these fateful months? and where was aunty Helen? the engine Room imagines these political icons in a partly factual, mostly fictional account of two seminal moments in New Zealand's history. Using an explosive combination of storytelling techniques, from documentary theatre to rugby-inspired choreography, the engine Room charts political and personal conflicts against a backdrop of police brutality and protest lines. With sport and politics going head to head, the battlelines are drawn. and the whole world is watching.

Road That Wasn't there, The

Synopsis:
In New Zealand there are some 56,000 kilometres of paper roads - streets and towns that exist only on surveyors' maps. Or do they? A young woman strays from the beaten track and finds herself in a paper town. It seems a land of possibility, but she soon discovers that actions taken in the fictional world can have frighteningly real consequences. the play is rooted in New Zealand folklore; from lost moa roaming the foothills, to faeries who drink moonshine out the back of Pyne Gould Guinness. Playwright Ralph McCubbin Howell (Outstanding New Playwright, Chapman Tripp 2011) says 'It's a story from the twitchy edges of children's literature - a dark world reminiscent of Coraline, Pan's Labyrinth, and the works of the late (great) Margaret Mahy.
