Laurence Housman

LAURENCE HOUSMAN  (1868 - 1959)

Nationality:    English
email:    n/a     Website:    n/a

Literary Agent:    n/a

Laurence Housman was born on July 18th 1865. He was the younger brother of poet a E Housman. Both brothers were gay. He studied book illustration and his first big success was to illustrate "Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti. But his eyesight began to fail and he turned to writing. He fell foul of the Lord Chamberlain on many occasions and may have been the most heavily censored of all playwrights. This was because his plays biblical plays were considered blasphemous. In 1945 he opened Housmans Bookshop -a radical pacifist shop that is still going strong today.

Lysistrata

Synopsis:
athens is at war. The men are fighting or dead. Humanity is suffering. One woman is sick of it. . .Taking matters into her own hands, Lysistrata calls the women of all the warring factions to gather in the city with one mission - to bring about peace. The men however, resist this idea. The battle lines are drawn& adaptation by Laurence Housman, writer, pacifist and human rights activist, first performed in 1911 in support of the Suffragette movement.

Time Servers

Synopsis:
It has a cast of 4 males: Father Time, Prehistoricus, Bellarius and Ecclesiasticus. That might perhaps give you an idea for the synopsis! a review calls it `a thought-provoking playlet with a dateless quality'.
