Burning Bridget Cleary

Synopsis:
Conceived as a language piece (the Irish dialect is surely the next best thing to music), this story is driven by a powerful narrative: events that took place in 1895 Ireland, when the fatally burned body of a young woman was discovered in a shallow grave near her cottage-and the jealousies, myths, and mysteries surrounding her death. the play occupies three distinct worlds: the confines of the laborer's cottage where Bridget Cleary has taken ill; the brutal stage of the courtroom, where close-knit family and friends are encouraged to betray one-another; and the mysterious "land of the Banshee", where the spirits dwell and beckon. their lyrical speech belies the lucklessness, the harsh geography, the isolation and frustration, and the anger of a people who have, historically, been up against it. Religion, paganism, politics, and love are all suspect in this story that imagines what took place in a small village-and the international repercussions that resulted.
