Sans-Culottes In The Promised Land

Kirsten Greenidge
Lenas days as Gretas new nanny are numbered: her mishaps with the washing machine have mangled all of her young charges clothes, the housekeeper is hoping to get her fired, the family she works for is suffering identity crises unique to black urban professionals, and, oh yes, a forest has begun to climb its way through the floorboards of the house. This is a play of velocity and image that rumbles to a chilling end.

Then you're dealing with a phobia, one of those most extreme and fascinating of terrors. actors Theatre of Louisville asked 16 frighteningly creative playwrights to find inspiration in real phobias, and the resulting collection of pieces might prove that not only is fear humankind's oldest emotion, but it's also one of our silliest, most serious, and stage-worthy. Yes, Please, And Thank-You

Synopsis:
College classmates Diane and Grace cordially sip cocktails in Diane's living room. although the din of gin and tonic rises steadily throughout their reunion it is unable to drown the racket of Diane's deepest fear, that of her fourteen year old daughter Perry, whom she purposefully leaves at gymnastics practice each evening in the hope that she can forestall Perry's constant need for parenting. Diane's mother, haunted by the unfair treatment she received in her younger days during her trips to the department store, pops in and out spouting what might be deemed nonsense if it didn't ultimately reveal the roots of Diane's anxieties. Relentlessly character driven, this is a piece about confinement, and the demands of femininity in the black elite.
