Deep Trance Behavior In Potatoland

Synopsis:
Deep Trance Behavior in Potatoland: a Richard Foreman theater Machine uses digital material filmed in Japan and england and takes place on a stage in New York in which everything is askew-the windows, the walls (covered with turn of the century photographs), and the furniture, which includes two pianos. even the large screens on which images are projected are off balance. Within this setting, the mind is asked to jump from world to world, Japan to england, filmed world to live stage world. the mind is also asked to jump to new ways of relating to reality, a reality in which ideas and behaviors, when viewed correctly, are also askew.

Film Is Evil, Radio Is Good

Film Is Evil, Radio Is Good
some other time and some other place, the last Filmmaker in the World is on display in a zoo that is also a radio station, allowed only to make films promoting the idea that Film is evil and Radio is good. Patronized and tormented by the Owner of the Radio Station and her associates (as well as a pair of fascist Zookeepers), the Filmmaker attempts to plead his case to the audience and hold onto his own values, even as the case against Film as a positive force is presented with greater clarity and increasingly violent force

George Bataille's Bathrobe

Synopsis:
It is the last day in the life of Frank Norris, writer (not that OtheR writer Frank Norris, this is one you've never heard of, somewhat of a cross between Henry Miller and Norman Mailer). He appears to be in a prison cell, in some unnamed country, for some unnamed political crime-but as his mind is slipping in and out of reality as he faces his impending death, you'll forgive him if he is romaticizing his situation somewhat . . . especially as six figures from inside his head have appeared to variously tempt and torment him, forcing him to look back at his long, rich life to see how many things he has still left undone, and how many regrets he still has. This collection of alien figures, some frightening, some incredibly appealing (plus his real world doctor, who is trying to help him sort it all out), pull him in different directions as he tries to decide how to exit his life, either on his feet and fighting or sliding away into an ignorant oblivion. In this production of Richard Foreman's 1983 play George Bataille's Bathrobe-the first fully-staged english language production, as it premiered in French in Paris, and last received a staged reading in 1998-the abstract text, written by Foreman only as dialogue, with no characters or scene descriptions, is here transformed by designer/director Ian W. Hill into a fantasia on mortality and the choices we make in how to deal with it, either through trying to ignore the painful reality through a reliance on sensual pleasure and physical possessions, or standing up and facing the harsh truths about the things we have done or left undone that we can never make right. a life passing before a man's eyes is shown, with all its attendant humor, violence, tenderness, and tragedy, in a collection of scenes ranging in style from music hall to dance to meloDrama to naturalism. George Bataille's Bathrobe is a collection of moments of one man's past life that might teach others how to live their future ones

Harry In Love: A Manic Vaudeville

Synopsis:
Harry Rosenfeld is a big, neurotic, unnerved and unnerving man who believes his wife is planning to cheat on him. His response: drug her and keep her knocked out until her paramour goes away. the plan works about as well as should be expected and, over several days, a number of people are sucked into Harry's manic, snowballing energy as it becomes an eventual avalanche of (hystErically funny) psychosis. Before embarking on his great career directing his own groundbreaking avant-garde plays, Richard Foreman briefly entertained the possibility of being a commercial Broadway playwright. This 1966 boulevard comedy (which Foreman has compared accurately to the plays of Murray Schisgal) nearly made it to Broadway, which very well might have meant a very different career for Foreman. It's not what you probably know from him, but it's as funny as his best work, and any line from it, out of context, would not sound out of place in one of his later plays. Really.

Idiot Savant

Synopsis:
Marie asks the Idiot Savant, "But what makes certain words-magic?" What follows is a wild theatrical odyssey that could only have sprung from the fantastical mind of Richard Foreman. This new work is a philosophical comedy, in the great tradition of Ionesco and Preston Sturges. From precise existential and metaphysical acrobatics, to a ridiculous game of inter-species golf with a Giant Duck, Idiot Savant is a fresh, bracing and hilarious exploration of the boundaries of the legitimate.

Symphony Of Rats

Symphony Of Rats
the President of the United States is receiving messages from other worlds. Perhaps they are the voices of angels, bringing a Divine message. Perhaps they are the voices of aliens, bringing warnings from other worlds or other dimensions. Or maybe, just maybe, the President is merely going mad. In any case, the leader of the free world is beginning to hate that world, and may be deciding to put an end to it once and for all. More and more, everybody else in the world looks like nothing more or less than a rat to the President, and the vermin have entered the White House. It's time to exterminate

Wake Up Mr Sleepy! Your Unconscious Mind Is Dead!

Synopsis:
postulates the invention of the airplane (controlled by a horde of baby-doll pilots) as the death knell of the unconscious mind. Foreman is responding to a world in which visionary sages and poets are being replaced by specialists who make platitudes out of the immediately observable and hand-feed them to the public. In Richard Foreman's universe, his muse and ally, the unconscious, fights back to life in a shape resembling 'the stone that rolls up the hill backwards' (the evil one) and from such 'evil', life renews itself.

Zomboid!

Synopsis:
featuring a large filmed component that was made in Melbourne, Australia in 2004. the slow-moving tableaus from that footage will be projected as a continual hallucinatory backdrop to what's happening onstage. the show features five live actors, frequently blindfolded, stumbling through what's described as a bizarre Foreman-esque landscape and surrounded by several metaphysical donkeys alternately mistreated and worshipped. While the onstage characters are looked down upon by the cool, glamorous, oversized characters onscreen, they try to come to terms with a world in which mysterious forces operate on multiple levels.
