Girls From Afar, The

Synopsis:
The Girls From afar is about slavery in America, which did not disappear with the Civil War. No longer institutionalized, it is hidden, tucked away behind manicured lawns and monogrammed golf carts. If the public could hear the clatter of the shackles in the streets, would it recoil it horror? What if the signs are much less obvious? Two girls have come from afar to work as domestics in a wealthy home, but what seems at first to be a great opportunity becomes a lifestyle of brutality.

Set in a small American city, I am Not an allegory (these are people i know), confronts sex, faith, and race from outside the perspective of the educated coastal class. Nine actors step off the stage and into reality to perform a play that takes place at this exact moment in your actual life. Outside the rush and tumble and race to the top of megatropolis America, six women and the men in their lives try to find meaning in lives that after 30 years, have moved from fantasy to reality.

Stupid: The Plays

Synopsis:
This is a program of nine "smart plays about stupidity." It's presented by Columbia's School of the arts Playwriting Class of '07. The playwrights are Rehana Mirza, elizabeth emmons, Jeremy Basescu, Alex Beech, Daria Polatin, Jon Kern, Julian Camilo Pozzi, Christine Chambers, and Reuben Jackson. The directors are ali ayala, Michael Lew, and Shira Milikowsky. The plays are about "white kids analyzing hip-hop culture, a woman suing herself, a starship captain fending off space pirates, global politics rewritten as a bad breakup, artists incurring mass debt to earn an MFA, botched blind dates, sensitive robbers, teenage angst, and failed actors turned failed psychics."

Sustainable Future, The

Synopsis:
It tells the story of a "green" architecture firm that is hired to design the U.S. embassy in Iraq. But when the office ceiling is leaking, the profits from a project in China can't be converted, and the staff hasn't been paid in weeks, the opportunity quickly turns to a quagmire. The play focuses on the company's office staff, which includes a ditzy intern who obsesses about fertility and patriotism, a gay employee who is a realist, and a sarcastic office manager.
