Orc

Synopsis:
In the London offices of a US head quartered global asset management firm, Joe is preparing for the first meeting of the Operational Risk Committee (ORC). the meeting is to be attended by a mix of London based colleagues and, by conference call, by colleagues in Boston, Frankfurt, and ideally Tokyo. the participants, who are all peers and firmly entrenched in middle management roles, drift in, complain about the weather, the coffee and the aircon and get down to business. as Joe has to explain what ORC is designed to achieve, and as basic terms have to be explained to the intern, Scott, it becomes clear that the focus is less on controlling risk than in being seen to do so and that the organisations grasp on the risks it faces is less than perfect. a battle between the rational and the pure pursuit of profit results in threats of repercussions and victory, of sorts, for the career focussed Joe.
