Singing Club, The To MusicSinging Club, The
Synopsis:
The Singing Club is a comedy about a group of amateur singers who meet weekly to share the joy of singing. For varying reasons they are mostly not very good. However, they are passionate about singing and this passion produces some professional sized egos. In act I as plans are made for the prestigious annual concert, to be attended be the club chairman, there are clashes of temperament and personality as old rivalries and jealousies which have lain dormant throughout the year suddenly surface. In act II we witness the incident filled concert itself. These characters will make you laugh a lot and perhaps cry just a little.

Synopsis:
To Music' is a sad comedy about Derek, middle aged, lonely and inadequate. almost his only social contact is with his younger friend Roger. Together, they hide their loneliness by joking about women, posh people, their gay vicar and anyone who isn't them. Derek's potential saving grace is an incongruous love of the songs of Schubert. a church concert gives him the chance to get close to Sylvia, a sophisticated and educated woman whom he has long admired from afar, and who has agreed to accompany him in the concert. Inevitably, Derek misconstrues the artistic closeness which develops between them as they rehearse Schubert's an die Musik' (To Music') and after the concert, in which he shines he makes a disasterous pass at the horrified Sylvia. The play ends with Derek listening first to Roger's latest puerile and suggestive answerphone message and then the beautiful and elegant accompaniment to the Schubert song as he looks round his once again empty flat.
Notes:
an die Musik' is one of Schubert's most beautiful songs. It is Also one of his most straight forward And should be singable by Any Actor with A reasonable voice. Derek is An Amateur singer not A top professional. Similarly, the piano Accompaniment is uncomplicated And should be quite manageable by A pianist of moderate proficiency. Actors wishing to play either Derek or Sylvia should not, therefore, be deterred in Any way because they may not be highly trained musicians. Having said that, A little practice may be in order!
