John practises as playwright, actor, director and also as visual artist. after a long apprenticeship with KISS Theatre in Northern Europe, John came to live in Australia where he directed community-based projects, becoming artistic director for Shopfront Theatre for Young People in Sydney, 88 - 92. In 1992, became manager of Townsville Civic Theatre and a year later president of NaRPaCa (the Northern Australian Regional Performing Arts Centres association). John was closely involved in setting up the Arts Regional Touring Service and Arts Transit, still the main systems for the distribution of performing Arts to regional areas of Queensland. In 2005, John became artistic director of Darwin Theatre Company, responsible for the company's programming and artistic planning. Through 2005/08, John directed several major productions for DTC as well as playreadings and special projects, including performance events in Minyerri, a remote aboriginal community in the Roper Valley. In 2006, John staged DTC's production of Shakespeare's Othello, with Tom e Lewis in the title role, the first time an aboriginal actor had played this role. John also performed as Professor Cornelius Crabbe in Stephen Carleton's 'Constance Drinkwater and the Final Days of Somerset' - DTC's co-production for the Darwin and Cairns Festivals.

Flash Alice

Synopsis:
Alice in the World Wide Web. Alice becomes trapped in the WWW and has to find her way out before the virus eats its way out the heart of her new computer. Based on 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' and also on ideas contributed by the young people of La Luna Youth Arts, this plays examines contemporary realities for young people. It is a wild funny rollercoaster of a play with lots of crazy characters adding to alice's bewilderment, until finally she runs out of patience and takes control of the machine.

Outside Lives

Synopsis:
Rural life is not what it used to be - and the difference is killing people. When aGNeS returns from the city to her hopelessly disfunctional family in NQ, she wants answers. Why did her brother die? Why did nobody tell her about it? Why haven't her parents spoken to each other in twenty years? Why is her boyfriend suddenly becoming aboriginal? No-one wants to talk but agnes is not the girl to take silence for her answer. Before the tangled histories are unravelled, her world turns upsidedown and her family finally understands that silence never was the solution. Funny, honest and original, OUTSIDe LIVeS is based on the playwright's talks with families and workers in rural communities. It features four great songs with music by Brisbane-based composer, Mark Shortis. This production has toured regional Queensland, playing eight NaRPaCa and two country venues with box-office success and considerable audience acclaim.

Spider Witch, The

Synopsis:
Dislocation, loss and doubt in a new country. How can she bring herself to release the mother who has held her captive all her life? How can she grasp the chance to live her own dream - while accepting her daughter's right to a freedom she never had? Three generations of migrant women trapped in a moment of reckoning. One of them must travel into the shadows of the past to find the exit for all three. Based on stories told to Daphne Cazalet by migrant women, the Spider Witch explores the bitter ironies and dark beauty of the migrant experience.

This is A solo piece Around one hour long. First performed by Meme Thorne And, subsequently, by Daphne Cazalet who Also initiated the project And conducted the original cultural development process from which the material for the play was drawn.

World Comes To Ingham, The

Synopsis:
Tells the migrant history of a small but important cane-farming community in North Queensland. the play was commissioned by the Italian-Australian Festival of Ingham. the writer interviewed many local people and was helped by local young writer, Melissa Guerra, and also by the local library and newspaper.
