Wife To james Whelan was rejected by the Abbey Theatre in the early 40's after the Abbey had been home to playwright Teresa Deevy's six plays between 1930 and 1936. Ms. Deevy's luck had turned; she'd been struck with deafness, a rare side effect of Meniere's disease with which she'd been diagnosed as a teenager. as a result she never heard the dialogue in her own works. She'd learned to lip read and she followed the actors in that mAnner. This play lay dormant in a closet for twenty years before it finally was produced in 1956.

Temporal Powers

Synopsis:
Temporal Powers tells the moving story of a great love straining under the weight of conflicting passions. Desperate and destitute, Michael and Min Powers take refuge for the night in a crumbling ruin. Buried within the walls could be the answer to their prayers-money for a fresh start-if only they could agree to use it. What follows is a fierce moral struggle that no one can win. Teresa Deevy's explosive Drama won First Prize in the new play competition held by the Abbey Theatre in 1932.

Wife To James Whelan

Synopsis:
Set in a small town in the middle of Ireland, Wife To James Whelan is the heart-wrenching story of star-crossed lovers. James is an ambitious young man determined to make his mark. Nan wants him to be content with what he has "and not be forever pushing forward." We meet them first on the day James learns he's won a prize job in Dublin, leaving Nan behind. James asks Nan to wait for him, but she'll "make no promise." We next see James seven years later, sole proprietor of a thriving new enterprise in Killbeggan, the "Silver Wings" Bus Service and "all the girls are going at him full tilt." Three women might be "Wife to James Whelan": Nan, his true love, Kate, his true friend, and Nora, who appeals to his ambition-but the unanswered question of the play is whether anyone or anything can bring him happiness.
