Molineaux

Synopsis:
a musical based upon the true story of a former American slave, Tom Molineaux, who battled his way to London in the early 1800s to challenge the world boxing champion, Thomas Cribb. Cribb, however, wants to retire and refuses to fight. Undaunted, Molineaux defeats all the contenders to the crown (while having a secret love affair with Cribb's mistress) and becomes one of the most popular sports figures in London. Boxing fans, however, don't want a foreigner (and especially a black man) to be their new champion and persuade Cribb to come out of retirement and defeat the young upstart. In what was hailed as "the battle of the century", Cribb actually beats Molineaux but loses the match because of cheating on the part of Cribb's manager and the timekeeper. Denied the championship, Molineaux falls into alcoholism and dies in Ireland.
