Hungarian Bird Festival         Man Who Would be Sting, The

Hungarian Bird Festival

Synopsis:
Over at the BaC, there's one of the funniest one-man shows I've seen in a long, long while. In 1998, Niall ashdown went to Hungary on a bird-watching holiday with his father. 'Hungarian Bird Festival' is his way of reliving that week's tensions, tediums and glorious epiphany. a regular collaborator with Improbable theatre, ashdown draws you into a state of nerdy fascination with all things ornithological using just two chairs and his own, considerable skills as a performer. You find yourself caring about such trivialities as the state of his binoculars and the discovery of eagle-owl pellets. "the pacing is superb; ashdown pecks around prosaic details then suddenly takes wing on a reminiscence. Standing half-in, half-out of the holiday, his detachment is at first highly amusing, then increasingly rueful as he contemplates the gulf between himself and his father, and between his adult and nine-year-old self. Flock to see it." Daily Telegraph

Man Who Would be Sting, The

Synopsis:
Has musical immortality already passed Niall by? Is Grade I piano and a biggish CD collection indicative of a Mozart manqué or, more likely, the unthinking man's Midge Ure? Using live, recorded and original music, Niall attempts to establish why music was his first love and how it won't be his last, and how oboes, girlfriends and the tag of legendary tunesmith cruelly eluded him. When Niall was 13, he wanted to be Sting. Still does. The songs cling on in his head. Along with the 1,000 other things that once upon a time might have been. A show that explores the seductive space between aspiration and achievement. Niall also performs in the festival with Between the Notes.
