Elaine Acworth studied at the East 15 Acting School in London, where she worked as an actor and a director. Her first play Torched was produced in 1990 by London's Finborough Theatre. She returned to Australia in 1991, and Composing Venus was the result of her work with the Queensland Theatre Company's new writing program. Her 1993 play Bod was workshopped at the Australian National Playwright's Conference.

Composing Venus

Composing Venus
Set in Charaters Towers, a faded gold mining town and home to the ore-crushing Venus Battery, in 1957 on the day that Sputnik was launched. Like a latter day comet, the man-made satellite acts as a catalyst for a host of transformations. This play spans three decades, in flights of fantasy, poetic phrasing and sombre soliloquy, to tell the story of three generations of women living in outback North Queensland

Gloria

Synopsis:
In her youth Gloria ran from Australia to Europe to be chanteuse and composer, rebel and romantic. Now, in her fifties and stricken by a stroke, she relies on music to grasp her memories - it's how she recalls being an unmarried mother in '70s Australia, shamed into giving up her child for adoption. Before Gloria's mind deserts her, she must reconnect with her long-lost son.

Solitary Animals

Synopsis:
Australian playwright, Elaine Acworth takes two of the most confronting themes of the 1990s and crashes them head-on. Both are sexual crimes - the use of AIDS as a deadly weapon, ant the rape camps of the Bosnian war. Each of the four ordinary characters must face issues of life and death but respond with their own individual coping mechanism. Blue wants revenge, Amela wants to choose, Grev wants to forget and Laurel wants to understand why. Do you avenge intolerable crimes or break the cycle of violence?
