Barbara Wright studied music in Paris and London and worked briefly as an accompanist. A contributor to Times Literary Supplement since 1965, she has also worked as a reporter for a local London newspaper and as a critic for the Arts Review, London, for twenty years. Her first translation was Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi and her second Raymond Queneau's Exercises for Style. She has since translated ten other books by Queneau and numerous works by other twentieth-century French writers, such as Robert Pinget, Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Tournier, Tristan Tzara, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Fernando Arrabal, Marguerite Duras, Jean Dubillard, Eugene lonesco, and Jean Genet. She has received the Scott Montcrief translation prize three times and is Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 1997 her translation of Nathalie Sarraute's Here (Ici) won the French-American Translation Prize. She lives in London.
