In Retrospect

Synopsis:
With its newest production, "In Retrospect," LOCO7 Dance Puppet theatre Company investigates how we each construct our personal memory box: how we keep our memories fresh and preserve the things that made us who we are. these include our mothers' embraces, lost loves, childhood dreams, ideals of youth and struggles of age, loss and birth. the production features giant puppets, marionette scenery, masks, choreography, acrobatics, live original music and video. A large marionette tree dangles fruits high above our reach which, when dropped, grow into our memories. Some of them summon feelings of being loved and secure, others evoke the opposite. For example, one scene depicts a huge Mother marionette and her little children, revealing the pleasure of hiding within the safety of her giant legs. Another scene has a puppet telephone and a character waiting for a call with a mixture of dread and excitement. We are reminded of our emotional dependence on the appliance as a "life line" which can be either a comfort or a monster. Reflecting the compartmentalization of our feelings, the stage will have a room-within-a-room where a person lives her life locked behind a wall. With this self inflicted alienation, she watches the world living yet remains cut off, unable to interact with society, hiding behind to safety zone of technology. the production will be designed, choreographed, and directed by FedErico Restrepo, a Colombian-born master of puppet theater and physical theater. the piece is being written and developed by FedErico Restrepo and Denise Greber. Music will be composed by Elizabeth Swados; this is her fourth collaboration with Restrepo.

Plunge

Synopsis:
Plunge is a solo work that combines the use of body puppets, marionettes, masks, dance, and music. It is framed in an unfamiliar world where in the protagonist struggles to find a new place to call home. His journey is filled with strange dreams which encroach on his view of the world, creating exciting conceptual images of the "displaced". the play deals with the relationship between where we come from and where we go. Restrepo explains," Grandparents ashes and the footsteps through the earth give us a way to enter the strange world of the main character as he deals with dreams of his former world, his homeland. they are drifting away and the anguish that this sensation brings about, form visualizations of the main character's mental state." Plunge, as with other Loco7 productions, creates movement and visual elements to abstractly express the anguish and detachment, which is the displaced persons experience; taking aim at the transcending barriers and linking the political and social borders that are in constant flux throughout the global community.

Room to Panic

Synopsis:
Room to Panic is a new work by LOCO7 depicting, in movement and visual theater, the struggles of the immigrant's mind on the path toward assimilation. It brings together magical puppets, choreography, three-dimensional scenery and video. Typical of FedErico Restrepo's style, the puppets will include huge winged creatures, 15-foot high politicians and mothers, a dancing puppet house and body-puppets of Restrepo himself. the following information is from the press release: "Room to Panic is the culminating production of a trilogy that Restrepo began in 2002, exploring the phenomenon of being a stranger in a strange land. Compared to the preceding two shows, it is more autobiographical and psychological. there is a living collage of images on the experience of living in a new culture. Since immigrants in a new country feel like fluttering birds without a home, the show opens with a flock of giant puppet birds plunging through the oceans on a huge boat. A 'memory Box' with a huge ear glides through the space, representing what's nagging at them that they can't forget. Large 'mother' puppets suggest memories of home; cooking videos suggest the foods that are left behind. A 'Panic Room Dance' illustrates the feeling of being trapped in a new place."

Urban Odyssey

Synopsis:
Urban Odyssey depicts the experience of immigration to America through movement and visual theatre. This new work is the culmination of a ten-year investigation that began in 2002 with a production created from FedErico Restrepos personal experience as a Colombian immigrant. the first episode 9 Windows revealed a series of multi-media experiences of being a displaced immigrant. the second episode Open Door (2006) addressed the impact of the many immigrants from diverse cultural backgrounds that make up NYC; revealing their histories and states of mind. the third episode Room to Panic (2008) depicted the joy, fear, alienation and struggle that reveal the allure, disillusionments and rites of passage to achieve the American Dream. Urban Odyssey will merge all these concepts, creating an epic journey that acknowledges the inevitability of a new American culture. A voyage of human experience, from leaving ones homeland, to finding a new country, to making a new home and setting down roots.
