Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast
the beginning of Disney's reign on Broadway, Beauty and the Beast recently celebrated its 12th birthday, and shows no signs of slowing down. Adapted from the now-classic Oscar-nominated animated film of the same name, Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle, a young French girl fed up with provincial life, who longs to experience the world-at-large. When her father, Maurice, takes a wrong turn one day, Belle gets her wish, and soon encounters the Beast, a former prince placed under a magical spell because he could not love. Bolstered by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice's now famous score, Beauty and the Beast takes a traditional tale and renews it with magic and charm.

Der Glockner von Notre Dame

Der Glockner von Notre Dame
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical based on the 1996 Disney film of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the 1831 Victor Hugo novel of the same name. This was Disney's first musical to premiere outside the US,[3] and it became one of Berlin's longest-running musicals to date. As with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, Der Glockner Von Notre Dame opened three years after the release of the movie it is based on. The musical is a darker, more gothic adaptation of the film. According to translator Michael Kunze, he was " 'campaigning to allow Esmeralda to die at the end, as she does in the book. There was a feeling that the audience would be depressed if Esmeralda dies. I feel that a European audience would see this as a very romantic ending. . .two lost souls finally find each other. People will cry, but they'll be moved. And it is a very romantic ending.' " The producers wanted to see how "preview audiences react before making the final decision."

Notes:
music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and book by James Lapine. The first English version of the musical was performed by The King's Academy in 2013 (though other sanitised or abridged versions were also performed earlier).

Newsies

Newsies
the film Newsies has grown into a cult phenomenon with a generation having grown up on the movie's driving, infectious score since its 1992 theatrical release and subsequent DVD. Newsies has for years been the single most requested title by professional and amateur theater groups, according to the world's largest Dramatic licensing agent, MTI. This new stage version keeps many of the film's beloved songs and adds several new numbers by the original team of Menken and Feldman. Newsies is inspired by the real life 'Newsboy Strike of 1899,' when newsboy Kid Blink led the ragged orphans and runaways known as newsies on a two-week-long action against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, the musical is the tale of newsie Jack Kelly, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when Pulitzer and Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsies' expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies his army of newsies to strike.
