American Poodle

Synopsis:
Did you know that the Welsh got to America and colonised Alabama long before Christopher Columbus was even a twinkle in the eye? Or that within 50 years of the arrival of the Mayflower, around 98% of the indigenous population of the US had been killed off by the arrival of guns, smallpox and syphilis? More an entertaining lecture - without any visuals, alas - than a fully fledged theatre show, Guy Masterson's slightly alternative history of America runs from the 11th century through to the declaration of independence that offered liberty and the pursuit of happiness to all Americans - except the slaves. Masterson's monologue is the first half of this double bill exploring the special relationship between the UK and the US. the title of the show says it all, although it may be the wide-eyed American businessman in the second part of the bill, written by Brian Parks, who is being sold a pup. Parks's script is a neat little satire of these isles delivered by an American abroad whose entire knowledge of the country seems to come from Hollywood movies and TV specials on Dickens and Shakespeare. there are some nice observations on the British way of life - taxis are described as hearses for dwarves - and our cultural influence on the US: the language and the best way to shoot Indians.
Lyn Gardner, Guardian

Anthem for a Doomed Youth

Synopsis:
In commemoration of the Great War, Fringe legend Guy Masterson has compiled 60 minutes of the finest WWI poetry and accounts from both sides of no-man's land. Including works from Wilfred Owen (Dulce Et Decorum Est, Anthem For Doomed Youth), Siegfried Sassoon (The Rank Stench, A Mystic As Soldier) and Isaac Rosenberg (The Immortals, Spring 1916, Break of Day), together with hitherto unknown German poets and moving stories such as Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet On The Western Front and the legendary Christmas Truce. Life in the trenches is brought vividly to life. Powerfully evocative.

Goering's Defence

Synopsis:
Powermonger, paladin or pawn, Hermann Goering was the highest ranking Nazi at the Nuremberg Trials and he told it like it was, citing "truth and honour" as his guide. His defence was astounding, logically brilliant and morally indefensible.

Snowball

Synopsis:
Supported only by a couple of chairs and a table, Masterson peoples the stage for Snowball with everything from the first (Welsh) discovery of the Americas (centuries before Columbus expedition) through the Jamestown settlement, the early colonists who in 15 years used guns and smallpox to bump off 110 million indigenous Americans, to the Founding Fathers, together with a truly manic portrayal of raving farmer George (the third) and America's George (the first) - general, then president Washington. This isn't just a series of clever cameo creations; it is a high-speed history lesson which makes it points with an ease, authority, pace and timing that I haven't seen since Alan Taylor's lectures in the early days of commercial television. Bitingly accurate (allowing for a little Welsh exaggeration) and it is very, very funny.
- Howard Loxton, British theatre Guide

Soldier's Song, A

Synopsis:
the Falklands War, ex-para Ken Lukowiak, veteran of Goose Green, tells his true story of combat, bringing the battlefield to the stage. This is theatre of war in its facets; the horror, terror, shame, humour, futility, tedium of a front line soldier. Using a pounding, authentic, multi-directional soundscape and original images, it's deeply disturbing and frightening, with the darkness offset by demotic squaddie humour.
