North Star

Synopsis:
The central character, Dr. Milton Alexander Ross, was a Canadian abolitionist, medical doctor, ornithologist and naturalist. He was a fascinating mixture - a scientist, an adventurer, and a seriously, moralistic, tight-assed stuffed shirt with a strong sense of entitlement. He didn't smoke, drink, swear, dance, nor was he tolerant of anyone who did? Sex? Never mentioned in his autobiography. Though he was tried in a southern courtroom on the charge of helping a slave escape he was not intimidated, barely refraining from lecturing them on the evils of slavery. On the pretext of studying southern birds, he wangled invitations to southern plantations as a means of personally contacting slaves. He knew John Brown and even tried to intercede with the Governor of Virginia on his behalf. Ross helped shorten the duration of the Civil War. Personally commissioned by Lincoln, he exposed a plot by southerners to invade the northern states from Canada. I thought it would be great fun to have him tangle with Melanie, a beautiful slave, escaping from a bordello, who arouses in him unexpected, strange feelings. She takes him through the journey from detached ideological humanism to an appreciation for the everyday, commonplace beauty of the world around him.

Notes:
North Star has been workshopped at the American Renaissance Theatre and Theatre Workshop with a score by Sheldon Gartner. An excerpt appeared in the Spring Reading Series of the American Renaissance Theatre in 2012, but has not gone the next step to a full staged reading.
