John Bashford: (Writer/ Director) trained at LaMDa and worked in the UK with the Churchill Theatre Company and on national tours with Cambridge Theatre Company before travelling to Australia where he lived for 10 years. a graduate of NIDa (N.S.W.) he was one of the founding shareholders of the Belvoir Street Theatre. From 1986 to 1992 he was the artistic Director of the Warehouse Theatre, Sydney. Productions include: the Sonnets, Not about Heroes, Dr Faustus, New Australia and the Duchess of Malfi. He directed the premieres of the White Rose of annandale and Rust in the Dust by Steven Dawson for WingandAprayer and Gulls and away for Now Theatre, Orange. Since returning to the UK he worked with Sir Peter Hall on Piaf, On approval and Hamlet, formed Briefly Shakespeare (with actor Andrew Vezey) and directed and taught at LaMDa and for the actors Network in Japan. Other productions include: Food, arcadia, the Sweetest Swing in Baseball, Search and Destroy, Othello, the Winter's Tale, Baal, the art of Success, a Midsummer Night's Dream, Serious Money, What the Butler Saw, Tales from the Vienna Woods and the Suicide. Hare's Breadth is his new company. Some Kinda' arizona was his third play. Daemons - after Frankenstein (his second) was commissioned by Sitos and LaMDa and toured Holland, Belgium and Northern Germany in 2004. New Australia, his first, was premiered in Sydney in 1992. He has recently completed a new play: the Hop Garden.

Daemons - After Frankenstein

Synopsis:
the excesses of the previous summer are over. Byron has gone on to Venice. Geneva with its lake and mountains are but a distant memory. Or would be except that Mary Shelley, under the guidance of her husband is in the process of bringing her first novel to fruition and Claire Clairemont, her step-sister, is pregnant with Byron's child. To protect Claire from gossip and provide quiet for Mary, Shelley takes a house in Marlow. as Mary corrects her proofs, the Frankenstein story comes alive but with unexpected consequences and something that has long lain dormant comes back to haunt her. Meanwhile Claire has given birth and Shelley struggles to keep an uneasy peace between them all - Daemons - after Frankenstein weaves these strands together to create a complex exploration of love and creativity.

Notes:
Commissioned by Sitos And LaMDa And developed by Hare's Breadth. It subsequently toured Holland, Belgium And Northern Germany between 7th January And 27th March 2004. A pre-rehearsal draft was published by Sitos to tie in with the tour. A new version with smaller cast requirement was completed this year (2008)

New Australia

Synopsis:
In 1892 a group of workers disillusioned by the growing influence of the Old World of europe on the New World of Australia and fired by the messianic leadership of a young socialist journalist called Billy Lane form the New Australia Co-operative association. Obtaining a gift of a tract of land from government of Paraguay they decide to sail to Montevideo in South America and then take a steamer to travel the 1200 miles up river to Paraguay where they intend to form a utopian colony based on socialist principles. the tensions within the group that have been ignored in the period prior to the departure from Australia start to play out once the group arrives in Paraguay and pioneering hope and optimism flounders under the practical experience of attempting to live in an alien environment.

Synopsis:
Lottie's been 'away'. Nine years since she disappeared her brother, Phillip, has tracked her down. . . to Hastings. He's looking for some answers - but is he asking the right questions? Some Kinda' arizona is a play about time and memory; a haunting exploration of the journeys we take through the landscape of our lives. about discovering passion in the most unexpected of places. about burning out, breaking down and sometimes letting go and what can happen when those most precious to us are lost. . . and found.
