Quiet Little Englishman, The

Synopsis:
Celebrating the life, work and legacy of George Groves, Oscar winning sound engineer and son of Liverpool. The Quiet Little Englishman is the little known true story of how George followed his heart to the USA where he developed the technology that gave us talking movies. Georges career spanned decades, he recorded the first spoken words for the talkies in The Jazz Singer, through to the soundtrack for the film of the Woodstock Festival in 69. His work changed the cinematic experience forever!

Notes:
Appropriately set in The Park Palace, a recovered cinema, Zho Visual Theatre have created a living film to tell Georges story through a promenade style show filling the spaces with soundscapes, film and theatre.

Ten Tiny Toes

Esther Wilson
An uncompromising account of the heartbreaking choices faced by mothers today and what happens when a distant war comes home. When he left for war he was her little soldier...Like every mother, Gill wants the best for her sons. Raise them well; keep them safe, clean and out of trouble. But for Michael and Chris the choices are few and far between. The only way to have the best is to be the best - join the army. As the brutal business of war unfolds, the boys become men their mother doesnt recognise, and maternal love is put to a gruelling test. Glued to the news and linked by satellite from their sofas to the battlefield, the mothers find a political voice that is uncomfortable but almost impossible to ignore.

Tony Teardrop

Synopsis:
Tony Teardrop is a biting, humorous play about people living on the edges of society. We follow Tony on a journey through his interior landscape looking for the true meaning of ?home'. We see the world through his relationships with fellow ?space cadets' and his struggles with the manager of the centre...until things come to a head when he takes the staff and residents hostage. The stage premiere version set in and around a ?wet house' for homeless alcoholics and inspired by real stories.

Notes:
originally written as part of a regional voices scheme with the National Theatre in 2004 but has never been given a stage production until now.

Trapped

Synopsis:
Imagine being trapped down a mine shaft (without Lassie). Or in a confined space of any size and shape. There's always hope of escape. A gallant rescue by a sexy fireman? Unfortunately Trapped isn't about any of that...it's more about being stuck up the creek of our own consciousness, without a paddle to help us sail the river of destiny...An intellectual Titanic set in the dry-dock of a wasteland - only without Kate Winslet and that American ponce. Trapped takes a darkly comic look at how society forces us to conform to the 'norm'. Who the hell says we can't be Elvis? Or Greta? And if we want to wear sequins on a Tuesday night in Accrington, then we bloody well should and let no bugger try and stop us. Trapped...is a scary place to be...but when others stand up to be counted like that bloke in Spartacus. . .well...just maybe there's a way out!

Unprotected

Esther Wilson
Unprotected explores the recent developments in Liverpool that surround the sex trade industry through a documentary-style theatrical piece. Esther Wilson, John Fay, Tony Green and Lizzie Nunnery embrace the diverse opinions from many of those involved in Liverpool's proposed legal zones for prostitutes. Based on over one thousand interviews with residents, sex workers, politicians, police and clients of the industry, this format allowed the writers the inside knowledge to create a dynamic and insightful drama. Against this background, transcripts sent in to the writers allowed a compelling and brutally honest tale to unfold. Unprotected is an undeniably forceful play that captures the true essence of issues that surround the real lives of those involved in the very relevant sex trade debate, and its effects on the community as a whole.
