Lost In A Desert World: A Play In Two Acts

Synopsis:
In two acts on a simple set (cot, chairs, platform - and podium in the last act), ROLAND, two FEMALE, and two MALE ACTORS give us the drama of Roland Johnson's life - from his troubled childhood in Philadelphia; to his years at Pennhurst State School and Hospital where he was raped and where he witnessed abuse and murder; to his remarkable emergence, first in Philadelphia and then across the US and internationally, as a moving speaker, a well-loved leader, and a respected visionary in the fledgling self-advocacy movement (the civil rights work of people with intellectual disabilities). The words of ROLAND throughout the play are authentic, taken from his "as-told-to" autobiography - comprised of edited and arranged transcriptions of taped conversations. Also used are both Roland's records from Pennhurst and detailed notes from the author's work with the self-advocacy movement.
