Synopsis:

Mrs Mason a widow lives alone in the rented rooms she had shared with her husband. His ashes are kept in a jar on the mantle piece. Using her husband's system she has continued to do the football pools. She wins a big prize and symbolically burns a five pound note to add to her husband's ashes.

Synopsis:

Although the War has been over for many years Marie Desbois is still full of bitterness and hatred towards the Germans. In the War a German soldier had shot her sixteen year old son dead and taken his cross as a souvenir. She vents her anger on a young eighteen year old German student at her cafe until he tells her that his dying father had sent him to her to beg forgiveness and to return the cross. The young German has been told by his father to offer himself to Marie as a replacement for her lost son
