Jatinder Verma was born in East Africa of Indian parents. He came to Britain as part of the Exodus of Kenyan Asians in 1968, at the age of 14. He founded Tara Arts Group with friends as a response to racial tensions during the summer of 1976. Under his direction Tara Arts has developed a distinctive style which imaginatively draws upon Indian and other Asian theatrical practices, without ever slavishly imitating them. In addition to his theatre work, he frequently lectures at educational institutions and conferences in Britain and abroad on Asian Theatre.
