Shirley Van Sandens commissioned work for young peoples theatre includes '1001 Nights', 'Ghost Train', 'Hidden Dragons' and 'Trains of Thought' for Barking Gecko Theatre Company, and 'Grendel and the Gladiator' for Spare Parts Puppet Theatre. In 2004, 'The New Girl', a puppet play she wrote as part of The Constable Care Child Safety Project, won the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award. Also in 2004 'Hidden Dragons' was nominated for Best New Play and won Best Production and Best Actor, Female at the WA Equity Guild Awards. 'Hidden Dragons' also attracted a 2005 AWGIE Award nomination in the Childrens Theatre category. 'Trains of Thought' has been nominated in the Theatre for Young Audiences category for the 2007 AWGIE Awards. Shirley has also written for Childrens television.

Heartworm

Synopsis:
Laughter, tears, dogs, cats, cars, Pizza. One Actor. Ann Hill is an ordinary person. She has done things people are ordinarily expected to do. From the outside, Ann has it made. She has the home, the family, the business. She really doesn't have anything to complain about  but something is missing. Ann has lost her passion. Now she just wants to leave the planet. Ann dreamed of being a travel writer, one who took the road less travelled. Real life however had other plans for her. Somehow, along the road she did travel, Ann's dreams got left behind. Heartworm is a one-person black comedy about finding meaning in the meaninglessness of life. The narrative unfolds over a week in Ann's life. From waving her dearly beloved' off at the airport Ann week proceeds in ways she hasn't anticipated, forcing her to re-evaluate the direction of her life.
