Er Toshtuk

Synopsis:
This is a world premiere of an experimental theatre piece. It features artists from Kyrgyzstan and Yara Arts Group performers. It will be performed in a combination of Kyrgyz and English but will be completely accessible to American audiences. This synopsis is from the press release: "Er Toshtuk (Sir Toshtuk), a magical and darkly humorous theatre piece, is based on one of the oldest Kyrgyz epics about a journey into the underworld and out into the cosmos. Toshtuk, a young warrior, falls into the Underworld and must battle giants, monsters, and a killer cauldron as he grows up, finding love and loyal friends. the tale is a part of the cultural heritage of the people of Kyrgyzstan, a land of nomadic horsemen, whose memory is rich with the mythical adventures of ancestral warriors. the performance will be very visual, combining movement, song, dance and shadow puppetry. Movement will include a traditional shamanic dance called jinde-be (a dance of being possessed by a spirit). Music will be performed by Nurbek Serkebaev (Kyrgyzstan) on ancient instruments including the kyl-kiyak (a small, bowed, unfretted fiddle with two strings and a plaintive tone), chopo cho'or (a pottery ocarina), temir o komuz (a metal jaw's harp) and jygach ooz komuz (a wooden jaw's harp with one string, unique to Kyrgyz music, that sounds like throat singing). Costume design includes Kyrgyz embroideries incorporated into modern costumes

Hitting Bedrock

Synopsis:
Our Donetsk is dying. . .Day by day, minute by minute. . .Our people are dying, our friends, our neighbors& in every home. My childhood is dying, our river, the Calmius, is dying. Shevchenko Boulevard is dying. We don't laugh anymore at the women in fur coats with their Infinities and Lexus in Donetsk City Mall on weekends. We aren't on the lookout for mayors and governors anymore. Our city, our region is dying in front of our eyes. We did not manage to protect it, or ourselves. We absolutely failed. Millions of refugees are disappointed, offended and abandoned. Individuals are trapped in the occupied area, their human rights trampled. We're a people without a future, a region without a territory. Who needs us now? Where shall these millions go? Everyone only wants to go to home. But now there is no home, our home has died, as did all our hopes, dreams, our past and present, and some have even lost their future. Not enough strength to even crack a smile.
By Oleksiy Matsuka, journalist in Donetsk, editor of Novosti Donbassa and Donetskaya Pravda, often been targeted by corrupt officials and pro-Russian separatists.

Scythian Stones

Synopsis:
Yara Arts Group summons ancient epics and rituals from Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan for Scythian Stones, an original, experimental World Music theater piece with choreography. the show constructs parallel journeys for two young women, from village life and nomadic tradition into the city. their separate journeys become epic descents into the Great Below: the modern global desert where songs, skills, and languages vanish, leaving behind only mute markers like the Scythian Stones found today throughout the grasslands of Ukraine and Central Asia. the production features traditional music from Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan as well as modern music, design, and movement. Interweaving performances in Ukrainian, Kyrgyz and English, Scythian Stones will be completely accessible to American audiences.
