Theatre Alibi are contemporary storytellers, creating work for all ages that moves freely between the intimate and the epic and aspires to be inventive, joyful, moving, vivid, intricate and ambitious. Our productions are marked by a passion for the live event - actors as storytellers absolutely present with their audience, live music, a delight in revealing acts of transformation that would often be confined to the wings and a level of inventiveness that allows us to embrace action that might seem to be unstageable. Past productions include Goucher's War, A Flying Visit, Ministry of Fear, Cobbo, Spies, Teapot, Lost & Found, The Crowstarver, Why the Whales Came, One in a Million, You Can't Catch Me and Shelf Life. Founded in 1982 by Alison Hodge and Tim Spicer and based in Exeter, Theatre Alibi tours its work to theatres and arts centres in the south west and nationally. The company also performs in Devon & South West primary schools, providing a first experience of theatre to many children who have little access to the arts.

Synopsis: | The Crowstarver is a gripping and moving story set in a close-knit rural community in the early days of the Second World War. When a baby is found abandoned in a lambing pen he is adopted by the shepherd Tom Sparrow and his wife Kathy. As the boy grows up its clear to everyone that the mystery of his birth is not the only thing about him thats special. John Joseph turns out to have an extraordinary gift with animals of all kinds. Foxes will eat out of his hand, hares and otters come close and he can even gentle a bucking bronco in true horse whisperer style. As the years pass, being different means John faces threats of all kinds, from ignorance and prejudice to the war itself, which brings its own share of tragedy. Full of unforgettable characters and scenes The Crowstarver combines an inspiring and heart-warming story with powerful performances, beguiling animal puppets and a stunning live score. | |||||
