Large Cast

Notes:

following a generous grant from the UK's Arts Council, it was extensively revised before its professional tour to schools in the North of England and republished by Samuel French, London in 2008

Synopsis:

This contemporary re-telling of an ancient folk-story uses (mostly) humour to engage young people and help them explore what are probably the two major issues facing their generation - global hunger and climate change. These urgent themes make it of special interest to teachers, educators and youth workers . . . It begins when the wise Sophia enters a starving Village and declares she will feed everyone with her magical soup. But first Makomo must follow the Star and persuade Mr and Mrs North to give up their monopoly of the Giant Cooking Pot. They eventually agree, and soon the pot begins to boil and bubble. The hungry Villagers gather round, but when Sophia asks them to each contribute a stone to help make her soup, they think she's mad. But the children gladly oblige, and - as if by magic - the soup begins to acquire a delicious taste and smell. As the mood lightens, Sophia sings and dances, and everyone eagerly anticipates the promised feast. But when Sophia speaks of peace and justice, the fearsome General Mayhem arrives and orders Major Hazard to place the soup under military control. All seems lost, but the spirit of sharing finally prevails and the Play ends with the hope of a new beginning. The Play runs about 60 minutes
