Prior to pursuing a full time career as a writer Somkin practiced medicine for ten years. He has written 8 full length and four one-act plays. Between the Rains, about the Brazilian environmentalist and labor leader Chico Mendes, won the White Bird Competition for plays with environmental themes and received a developmental grant from The Pilgrim Project, an organization that supports work with an ethical message; Darci's Report, an excerpt from the play, took Second Prize in a competition sponsored by "Grain," the Canadian literary magazine. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild and alumnus of the New Dramatists where he was a past president of the New Dramatists Alumni.
