| In Vilna in 1941 the Nazis under the command of SS officer Vittel have exterminated 50,000 of the local Jews. Some of the remaining Jewish people who work in the theatre are ordered to sort out their clothes. Whilst doing this it is discovered that Hayyah has a kilo of beans concealed on her. Kittel tips the beans over the floor and orders the Jews to pick up every one in a minute or be shot. They fail but he discovers that Hayyah can sing. He orders her to sing and is entranced with her voice. Srulik is a ventriloquist and is in love with Hayyah but only his dummy can talk to her - Srulik is too shy. Kittel gives the theatre people an empty warehouse and says they can perform there to entertain his troops | |||||
