Synopsis: | BAM's 2009 Next Wave Festival continues with Imaginary City, an evocative multimedia work from the ensemble So Percussion. So Percussion has taken inspiration from Italo Calvino's 1972 novel Invisible Cities and created a unique meditation on urban environments. Through music, film, and installation, Imaginary City explores a variety of perspectives and forms within cities and among the people that inhabit them. Featuring the innovation and technical mastery of So Percussion and film from video artist Jenise Treuting, Imaginary City takes audio and video recorded from the streets of many cities to create a single "imaginary city." Interaction with the environment of the Harvey Theater is a natural extension of the piece, as is the utilization of sounds and images from New York City itself. Imaginary City explores the various ways that depictions of cities past and present often collide with the myriad faces that any one city can contain. | |||||
