Levy's Ghost         Shadow of the Valley

Levy's Ghost

Synopsis:
An exciting play about a naval hero, Uriah P. Levy (1792 - 1862, born, Philadelphia, PA), who was the first American Jew who rose to the rank of Commodore in the U.S. Navy. This nearly forgotten American hero and patriot suffered and triumphed over six courts martial due to religious persecution. He was responsible for helping to end flogging in the U.S. Navy. He was a great admirer of Thomas Jefferson and when the opportunity arose he purchased the dilapidated Monticello and restored it to its historic beauty. the play brings these two extraordinary gentlemen "together" highlighting the life of Commodore Uriah P. Levy as well as focusing on major issues that are as important today as they were to Jefferson and our country's founding fathers. Levy's Ghost is also being produced this season during the national celebration of 350 years of Jewish life in North America. Note: September 18, 2005 the U.S. Naval Academy honored this extraordinary naval hero through the support of the Friends of the Jewish Chapel when they dedicated the brand new 28,000 sq. foot, $10 million Commodore Uriah P. Levy Center and Jewish Chapel on the U.S. Naval Academy campus in Annapolis, MD
