Pia Scala-Zankel lives in Dumbo with her husband and 2 children and was born and bred in Brooklyn, where she attended Saint Ann's School. Proud of her roots, Pia often tells the story of how her Great Grandfather came over from Italy and died building The Williamsburg Savings Bank when the elevator cable broke, in other words her blood runs through the Brooklyn streets. Pia is thrilled to be a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of Vertigo Theater Company. She made her writing debut with an excerpt from her play, Street Children, in Vertigo Theater Company's Summer 2013 production of COLLAB: a developmental series of staged readings of new works that featured the talents of Vertigo, LabRats, and Labyrinth company members at The Wild Project in NYC. COLLAB is currently slated for October of 2014 at BAM and will be co-curated with Emily Simoness, founder and executive Director of Space on Ryder Farm. In 2013, Vertigo Theater Company also produced, The Living RoomSeries featuring three short plays by Labyrinth Theater Company member and Farm Theater Artistic Director Padraic Lillis. The plays were showcased at Julie Pacino and Jennifer Delia's Poverty Row Loft in Chinatown, NYC and have been published by Indie Theater Now, under the title, The Living Room Series: Three Short Plays by Padraic Lillis. The Living Room Series 2015 will feature commissioned work by noteworthy playwrights, Lucy Thurber, Jessica Brickman, and Lindsay Joy and will take place at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn. Vertigo Theater Company is currently producing an on-going series called, SHOPTALK, a Salon Style Q&A with buzz-worthy artists such as Stephen Adly Guirgis, John Gould Rubin, Stephen Mckinley Henderson, and 2014 Obie award winning playwirght Lucy Thurber. This Summer, Pia will be in Artistic Residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm where she will be preparing her play Street Childrenfor 2015 production. She spent her summers growing up in Sag Harbor where she is currently a trustee and sits on the Executive Committee of Bay Street Theatre. Pia proudly supports numerous theater institutions and companies in the greater NYC area and is passionate about facilitating the growth and production of New Works by emerging playwrights as well as nurturing a strong and collaborative artistic community. Pia graduated from Skidmore College and is a Labyrinth Theater Ensemble Workshop alumni.
