Away Uniform         Family         In the Pony Palace/FOOTBALL         Knockout Blow, The         Nurses In New England         Seagull (Thinking of You)

Away Uniform

Synopsis:
Tina Satter and Half Straddle present a preview showing of Away Uniform, an unexpected companion piece to and darker heartbeat of the critically acclaimed In the Pony Palace/FOOTBALL. Using her poetically tinged approach to the language and feelings of sports as a textual layer, Tina creates an even more abstracted, but potent world out on the Plains to consider teammates, family, and belief in something more.

In the Pony Palace/FOOTBALL

Synopsis:
The Bushwick Starr and performance group Half Straddle present a new piece, In The Pony Palace/FOOTBALL. Half Straddle artistic director Tina Satter claims the traditionally male construct of athletics and team sports, as embodied in American football, and reframes it for a female paradigm in the company's new piece. Mixing the specific language, aesthetics, and dynamics of football with Tina's incisive and tweaked reinterpretation of high school-speak, Half Straddle creates the world of the Pony Palace where girls play football in full pads, cheerleaders still have all the power, and riding on the bus after the game feels like the most amazing moment ever. Half Straddle composer Chris Giarmo and musician Bobby McElver create the score for this singular high school landscape with mashups of the forgotten Rolling Stones album Black and Blue and obscure Lady Gaga songs played live with the Pony Palace marching band.

Seagull (Thinking of You)

Synopsis:
Writer/director Tina Satter draws on Chekhov's letters, translations, and perverse sense of comedy to consider anew the darkness, beauty, and history of Chekhov's iconic play The Seagull and its resonances with her Half Straddle ensemble. Seagull (Thinking of You) is a personal look at performance, failure, and attempted love -- ultimately an unexpected meditation on why we ever try to say something out loud. With a Russian folk metal-influenced score.
